Warner Independent goes for sci-fi

Warner Independent Pictures is set to remake the 1977 British film The Man Who Fell to Earth, which starred David Bowie and was based on the 1963 novel by Walter Tevis. The story centers on an alien who comes to Earth disguised as a businessman in hopes of obtaining water for his planet. As he tries to complete his quest, he becomes the head of a international conglomerate, where he learns of the greediness of mankind. Soon, this plunges him into a metaphysical crisis of conscience. Oren Moverman will adapt the screenplay.

Nicolas Roeg's sci-fi classic The Man Who Fell To Earth, which showed off David Bowie's unworldly acting talents, is to be remade. Warner Independent Pictures and Cherry Road Films have acquired the remake rights to the 1976 film as well as the rights to the Walter Tevis novel on which it was based. If you've only just recently landed on Earth, the story concerns an alien who comes here in the guise of a businessman on a mission to gain water for his home planet. Once here, he becomes embroiled in the greed of mankind as the head of a powerful international company.

Atheist of Love (kate), Friday, 28 October 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

They should use Conor Oberst, and he falls to earth in the middle of a football stadium and the enraged fans beat him to a bloody pulp before he has a chance to beguile them with his doe-like eyes.

The real question is: who can get within a mile of Rip Torn's performance? I'm afraid they'll give it to Kevin Sp4cey.

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:06 (twenty years ago)

Basically, it's a really stupid idea for a remake. The Roeg movie is not perfect, and Bowie is not a great actor, but his look and his performance here is pretty legendary and there is simply no way that a remake could be as good or that they could find anyone as perfect as Bowie for the part.

Owen Wilson is a planetary treasure. He should be the Ambassador of Earth.
I seem to remember the original MWFTE went on too long.

In that case, with Eddie Izzard as the disillusioned scientist.

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 28 October 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

I might actually pay to see Izzard in the lead role.

Soukesian, Friday, 28 October 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Forget Rip Torn, I'd like to see Rip Taylor in the lead.
