"I've been going to Cafe du Soleil at Wller and Fillmore practically every weekend since they opened."

Is this place good? I have been looking for a good French bakery for a while. So much disappointment in my raisin swirl purchases.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 23:07 (twenty years ago)

Rigo's bakeries are all over the place now. Boulange de Pine at Pine and Fillmore delivers to Soleil I believe. Excellent bread and patisseries. Get some cannelés as a special bordelais treat.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 01:54 (twenty years ago)

You have made me hungry. (I return to SF in mid-February for four days and insist on feasting at a good place as you describe.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 01:55 (twenty years ago)

E-mail me, Ned.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 02:24 (twenty years ago)

Do you know any decent bordellos?

Just kidding!

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 04:12 (twenty years ago)

Why ever would one want to go to a 'decent' bordello? Makes it sound like it's family friendly or something.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 16:38 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

Monsieur White-

how foolish am I for considering purcahsing a seersucker suit off ebay?

i wouldnt be wearing it anywhere fancy-pants, just out and about or to a wedding or two.

gr8080, Sunday, 8 July 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

I can't say, really. Make sure to spend a few bucks extra once you get it to have it altered and it will be all that much better. I wore a seersucker suit to a wedding in late May, flubbed a handoff of a bottle of champagne from the bride at about 1AM as the reception ended and everybody prepared to go to afterparties and when the bottle exploded on the ground, was too concerned with whether the bride's dress was affected to notice that a small shard of glass, propelled by the pressure of the effervescent wine, had stabbed me just below the knee. I didn't feel it until she pointed out to me that I was bleeding - profusely. Still, that could happen in any suit, but at least with a seersucker one, it's more dramatic (not to mention patriotic) looking.

Michael White, Monday, 9 July 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

too bad those image artifacts aren't real on that suit gr8080

http://images.andale.com/f2/116/105/12097278/2007/3/11/click2enlarge/DSCN0001.JPG

and michael white, you are a true gentleman.

sanskrit, Monday, 9 July 2007 14:16 (eighteen years ago)

I advocate seersucker. Just don't wear your straw boater with it or else you may look like a patent medicine salesman.

elmo argonaut, Monday, 9 July 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

A boater's okay, but seersucker looks better with a panama, anyway.

Michael White, Monday, 9 July 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

Two words clinch the answer to this question: "off ebay". Buy rubber chickens off ebay. Buy tiki torches off ebay. Buy phony Rolexes off ebay. But don't buy a suit off godforsaken ebay.

Aimless, Monday, 9 July 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

I always used to buy vintage clothes off eBay. Not sure if this is vintage but it's definitely a great place for that type of shopping.

Ms Misery, Monday, 9 July 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

Dear Michael White:

Elsewhere someone was complaining about docksiders coming back, which is readily understood. What would you consider the well-dressed man's proper footwear in these times?

Yours
Ned

Ned Raggett, Monday, 9 July 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

I buy clothes off ebay all the time. It can be iffy with sizes but some listings actually have really good info on measurements.

ALSO I HAVE A QUESTION FOR MR. WHITE:

Is brandy best over ice or are there other good ways to drink it?

jessie monster, Monday, 9 July 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

with a suit i'd be getting it tailored once it arrived anyway.

gr8080, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

Michael, you're so suave, that velvet feels coarse in comparison.

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

Dear M. White,

How did you get to be so awesome. Is there a twelve-step program or thin paperback I could acquire to become awesome like you. Or perhaps an audiocassette that I could play under my pillow at nights, allowing it to work on my subconscious, or at least cause my dreams to be awesome.

Casuistry, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

It's hard work, gabbneb.

so something other than 'think up cool locations', then?

gabbneb, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

A location manager's role follows a sequence of activities from the pre-planning to completion stages of a production. Typical activities include:

assessing scripts or story boards and breaking them down into locations and a schedule;
meeting with the director and designer to discuss projects;
collating ideas and undertaking research using resources such as the internet, specialist location libraries, local and regional film commissions/agencies;
visiting and photographing locations appropriate to budget to assess suitability;
making preliminary enquiries regarding access, parking, and location use;
liaising with the director to discuss and show ideas and photographs;
collating practical information on potential locations, such as hotels for accommodating the crew and cast. In the case of photography shoots, the location manager often books the hotel and travel arrangements as well;
liaising with key members of the production team to assess visual and technical specifications;
negotiating access and drawing up a contract with location owners;
researching locations thoroughly to ensure no disruptive works or events are likely to take place during the shoot;
organising permissions for access, for example with local authorities and the police;
scheduling crew arrival dates and times and keeping all parties informed on site;
organising the technical specification for equipment, power sources and accommodation for crew on site;
ensuring health and safety and security requirements are met at all times;
distributing maps, directions, parking plans and all relevant support information to all services and crew;
arranging schedules for the day with the assistant director to ensure continuity;
managing the location on the day and resolving practical or people-related problems as they arise;
supervising location support staff throughout the process;
being in constant attendance to ensure all aspects run smoothly including the final clearing up and thanking of site owners.

omar little, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

thanking of site owners <--- toughest part

omar little, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, sorta what i figured. sounds like a lot of fun but not especially well-suited to me.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

what sort of (athletic) footwear does m. white use/endorse?

askance johnson, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

That depends entirely on the emoluments offered.

You can say what you want, but the lawnmower had the right of way...

I'm in Paris. Beaujolais is ubiquitous here right now but as iniquitous as ever. I've been drinking St Joseph, Chinon, Sancerre, Champagne, Graves, Morgon, and closest of all to Bojo, Morgon, but I've managed to avoid the vile stuff.

Michael White, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 08:56 (eighteen years ago)

mmm sancerre

Michael, this kind of repetitive construction might be OK in French, but in English we have rules, you know.

Dear M. White,

You have/do work in film production, right? Can you recommend a lawyer with experience of film writer's agreements, WGA arbitration, etc.? Bonus points if they are in NYC rather than LA, but I'll take what I can get.

Anyone else reading this with knowledge of this area welcome to chip in (slocki? max and lamp llc?)

caek, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 18:07 (seventeen years ago)

"You have/do work in film production, right?"

^^^ needs rewrite.

caek, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 18:07 (seventeen years ago)

I haven't worked in film production in quite a while, caek, and have practically no contacts in NYC nor in writer's issues. :(

Location scouting.

I don't if he's been around as of late but remy might also know of some lawyers w/industry experience.
