When is it okay to call someone a slut?

Serious question. I generally hate this word because of the obvious double standard that always comes with it when someone calls another person(= a woman) slut. So can we define the word and decide when it it's appropriate to use the it.

If it's as simple as someone who just sleeps around all the time then to me it's not really a bad thing to be a slut.

Slut refers to when a woman has frequent sex with so many partners that she needs bigger and bigger and more and more dicks which cause her slit becomes a slut. Just a big old sloppy, dirty hole. The reason it's a double standard is that men don't have holes. We have poles.

slut Look up slut at Dictionary.com
1402, "a dirty, slovenly, or untidy woman," probably cognate with dialectal Ger. Schlutt "slovenly woman," dialectal Swed. slata "idle woman, slut," and Du. slodder "slut," but the ultimate origin is doubtful. Chaucer uses sluttish (c.1386) in ref. to the appearance of an untidy man. Also "a kitchen maid, a drudge" (c.1450; hard pieces in a bread loaf from imperfect kneading were called slut's pennies, 18c.). Meaning "woman of loose character, bold hussy" is attested from c.1450; playful use of the word, without implication of loose morals, is attested from 1664.

"Our little girl Susan is a most admirable slut, and pleases us mightily." [Pepys, diary, Feb. 21, 1664]

Sometimes used 19c. as a euphemism for bitch to describe a female dog. There is a group of North Sea Gmc. words in sl- that mean "sloppy," and also "slovenly woman," and that tend to evolve toward "woman of loose morals" (cf. slattern, also Eng. dial. slummock "a dirty, untidy, or slovenly person," 1861; M.Du. slore "a sluttish woman").

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 29 October 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

I was right. Thanks, Hurting.

It's really an intuitive word. It's when you overanalyze it that you start to run into problems. Don't worry, slutty women, men have their own sexist terms applied to them, too. Pigs, dogs, etc. It's not our fault that the penis recouperates rather quickly.

Not to get all fem crit on you, but it seems like the word's negative connotations are built into it from the beginning. If there's nothing wrong with being a woman who sleeps with a lot of guys, then the word for that shouldn't connote dirtiness or loose morals.

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 29 October 2005 02:51 (twenty years ago)

Slutfaced bunch of slutty sluts.

Nothing objectively "wrong" with it, no. But not every man's preferred "type" of woman. Also, morality is culturally linked with sex and gentials associated with filth like smegma and disease, so why not connot dirtiness and loose morals?

genitiles

xpost - Why does sleeping around = loose morals?

Hurting (Hurting), Saturday, 29 October 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

I don't know, Hurting. Might have something to do with disease, jealousy or religion. Perhaps all of the above.

Answer, Saturday, 29 October 2005 03:33 (twenty years ago)

You guys seem to be forgetting something: 9/11 smegma.

captin crunchheart (dr g), Saturday, 29 October 2005 03:42 (twenty years ago)

All insults are words used to judge someone by someone else's set of standards, anyway. That's why those fucking assholes think you're a god damn son of a bitch.
