Seals are sorta sexy.

x-post

Scary too. These had pups and although you can't judge from the pictures, the mothers were fucking HUGE.

Were you on Dune?

It's on the North Lincolnshire coast, a wildlife sanctuary that doubles as an RAF bombing range. It's a fantastic landscape, so flat and huge and geometric.

Whoa… it's really bizarre looking!

Remy (x Jeremy), Saturday, 29 October 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

DONNA NOOK!

Must go there myself some time

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Saturday, 29 October 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

I like that last one. The lack of scale is disorienting and cool.

Yeah, Donna Nook. Definitely go, Forest. It's intense.

I can't be the only one that thinks this is a bit fucking bizarre...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 29 October 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

You probably drove right past my office on the way there, incidentally.

My family used to go to look at the pups every Christmas - although by Christmas most of the seals have left. This is a photo I took 10 years ago; it would be better if you could see the seal pup a little better:

The warning signs are hilarious, they basically say "If You Find Any Metal Objects, Don't Touch Them As They May Explode and Kill You."

Is your office on the main drag through Grimsby then?

Patchouli Clark (noodle vague), Saturday, 29 October 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

Yup - well, on the way into Grimsby. It overlooks the A180 just before the first roundabout you get to.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Saturday, 29 October 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

MORE SEALS, LESS GEOMETRIC LANDSCAPES

The seal pics aren't great, we obviously didn't want to get too close and worry them.

Patchouli Clark (noodle vague), Saturday, 29 October 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Well, it's not like they can run after you.

giboyeux (skowly), Saturday, 29 October 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking of the seals, not me. But I will reiterate that the adults are massive and they seem to waddle pretty fast.

Patchouli Clark (noodle vague), Saturday, 29 October 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

One of the things about going to see seals as a teenager, with your parents, *after* they've all given birth, is that there's lots of potential for embarrassing "yes, they're all having sex" moments.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Saturday, 29 October 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

They look like lumps of shit peppering the sandy shore.

I went to see Elephant Seals in California when I was a child. Those are some seriously offensive beasts.

Spinktor the Unmerciful (mawill5), Saturday, 29 October 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

From what I remember being told at a Sealife Centre, seals are very heavy for their size too. Their blubber and skeletons are really dense, built for surviving cold deep water.

Patchouli Clark (noodle vague), Saturday, 29 October 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

This whole thread (so far) is about lonely, empty, mammal depression. I say *fuck-a-seal*

Like Luke Skywalker: I'd only use one to cuddle up in their dying still-warm corpse.
