Realistic Bad Dreams

For the last two nights, I've dreamt about such things:
I've come back to my home town with my tail between my legs and am living in a rundown apartment. I am visited by an ex-girlfriend I can't stand in real life and yet I can't convince to be with me in my shitty little apartment in my dream. I'm hating myself in the dream for even asking her, but becoming more annoyed that she won't because I don't even hold her in any regard. Then I stab my mother in the heart, but don't kill her and somehow I escape being thrown in jail, yet the whole town knows I stabbed her and am a failure. not press charges. So, I can't enjoy going to any parties. Then, I am visited by another ex-girlfriend whom I wronged in real life and would probably have nothing to do with me, yet in the dream, she is all nice and doesn't bring up the fact that I've stabbed my mother and am a failure. She tells me she is about to move into Manhattan and I think I asked her if I could come and this either scared her away or she politely refused because then she disappeared from my dream and all of a sudden the dream was about stalking her.

Good times!

I haven't had dreams like this for a long time, if ever before.

If I were scripting likely nightmares for Calum, they would be very, very like this. If you are someone else, which I guess you probably are, you don't deserve this.

I almost typed "nightmares" but they're not really nightmares. They're just realistic bad dreams. It's a very odd feeling, but not terror-inducing.

I also noticed the longer I slept, the worse they got, so I eventually just got up. A nightmare usually has you too afraid to continue sleeping.

I also just had a dream about getting rejected by an ex-girlfriend whom I actually can't stand. But, you know, they say all elements of dreams are actually aspects of our own psyches, so, um, yeah.

last night i had a dream that ethan was a shapeshifting hermaphroditic serial killer who was trying to pick off a group of us. it was hyper-realisitc, like a crazy 3-D movie.

I used to get bad dreams about waiting tables all the time - the eternal wee0ds, the eternal weeds naked, going back to work at a place I got fired for theft from, etc.. I was never swallowed by the gaping maw of hell or killed for my incompetence, but they were still pretty scary.

Are You Nomar? (miloaukerman), Sunday, 30 October 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

Haha. Someone loaned me a book about waiting tables in which staff from around the US told stories, arranged by topic. Apparently EVERYONE dreams of the weeds, the nakedness, the impossibly huge section, the orders that just keep coming up long after you've exhausted your tables. I'm not sure you can understand the horror unless you've been there.

And yet, dream analysis is bullshit.

The weird thing is I'm just starting to realize this wasn't a dream!

I keep dreaming that I'm back in high school (I graduated in 1992), and it just sucks, because there are quizzes I don't know about & some girl that I know I'm supposed to be wooing (whose attention I can never attract) and GUH. The last thing that always happens before I wake up is think "I'm a grown man, I haven't set foot in a high school or college in years" and BAM, it all evaporates.

Once I dreamt I had a repressed memory of almost drowning in a narrow outlet tube thing in a huge hydro dam. The dream's very difficult to explain - but in it, I was terrified I would remember this near death horrible experience. I couldnt accept this horrible thing had even happened to me, and I didn't want it to reappear in my mind.

It was so specific and unusual, it left me feeling EXTREMELY uneasy for some days.

I wondered wether my mind was trying somehow to recall birth and my sensible brain was going WOAH NELLY NO WAY THATS NOT FOR REMEMBERING.

Also, once I dreamt I cut up and cooked someone and the smell was disgusting. They were in a bit pot, the bones were all grey and fat floated on the water.

I can assure you a dream is all it was!

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 31 October 2005 04:03 (twenty years ago)

had a dream, once

RJG (RJG), Monday, 31 October 2005 04:13 (twenty years ago)

the other night i had a dream that i was walking through a deserted hell's kitchen in the middle of the night and i found this out-of-the-way sidestreet bar that was a total '80s nyc scenester timewarp -- all these sub-jarmusch artist types and druggie punkers slumped over half-eaten plates of french fries and not saying much. the waitress who took my drink order was just about to head out to her other job and she'd already changed into her hooker costume. there was a band that was supposed to play in an office on the second floor, but they never showed up. i got to talking with some of the regulars and they knew alex in nyc. (haha they referred to him as "alex in nyc"!)

when we finally stumbled outside it was morning, and it wasn't hell's kitchen anymore, it was an art installation in a weedy abandoned lot in long island city. and there were rusted-out cars and large hollow drainage pipes all around us.

not a bad dream, all told... but it was freaky.

jody that sounds like your ideal evening out! why did you wake up?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 31 October 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

i ask myself that question every day.

I am going to now take a pill of melatonin. Guaranteed to have full-on nightmares! But, I will be asleep in just a few minutes! Not good for my brain chemistry either, but what the hell, I bought these pills like 2 years ago and only used 2 or 3 pills due to horrific nightmares.

Merv, Monday, 31 October 2005 04:52 (twenty years ago)

I've found that taking 5-HTP (a serotonin precursor) helps me sleep better. I take it with regimen of other nutrients, so I can't pinpoint exactly which one is most effective. No nightmares beyond the usual weirdness, though.

The weird thing is I'm just starting to realize this wasn't a dream!
