Can someone define this?

Ms. Wilson's husband, Joseph C. Wilson IV, a former ambassador who cast doubt on the administration's prewar assertion that Iraq had tried to buy uranium from Niger, did not get his wish to see Mr. Bush's chief political aide, Karl Rove, "frog-marched" from the White House.

I've just looked in four sources and got four slightly different descriptions, and no explanation, even from Brewer.

But try some different dictionaries, and there are are different explanations - being carried by four people, one to each limb, face down; being carried by the legs, hanging upside down; being held off the ground by two people either side, and carried. And what has any of this to do with frogs?

It probably either has to do with french surrender, or how you walk sort of bowlegged because your arms are held.

Frogmarched was what happened after I got caught shoplifting at a grocery store as a teenager and I had pepperoni in my pocket and when they searched them I told the guard to grab hold of my pepperoni.

I thought it was being hauled along by the scruff of the neck (or collar) and the seat of the pants -- making it hard to walk properly, so they have to sort of hop along.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 30 October 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

Technically, frogmarching when a prisoner is forced into a squat and his /her arms are clasped behind the knees. Then, a metal or wooden pole is slipped between the elbows and knees, locking a prisoner into an extremely uncomfortable bent-back/bent-knees position. Then you march 'em to prison.
