One hell of a Halloween costume.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 30 October 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

One of its primary effects is considered to be the vomiting (the purge) that accompanies the experience.

uhhh no thanks

[The] more accepted [than broadly psychodelic use] is entheogenic in nature. People seek answers from the plants of ayahuasca. But even then reverence and the sacredness of ayahuasca is many times forgotten. It is important to emphasize that the more one puts into the experience the more one will get out of it.

"2-6 hours of peak effects with 1-8 hours after of lingering effects, depending on dosage and individual user variation"

I know people who have, but haven't done it personally. Probably would if under the proper circumstances.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 30 October 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

Dude, even Burroughs didn't handle that stuff!

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 30 October 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

There was a programme on telly about this. It didn't look fun.

Markelby (Mark C), Sunday, 30 October 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

why would you expect it to be "fun"?

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Sunday, 30 October 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

(altho one of the people I talked to about doing it said she spent the whole trip giggling and laughing and not understanding why the shaman and others with her were being all stern and serious)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Sunday, 30 October 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

Read the Burroughs letters a half dozen times in college. Sounds amazing and awful.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 30 October 2005 22:55 (twenty years ago)

Yeah thats what I was thinking of - his letter to... who was it, Ginsberg? Describing Yage and how it made him puke violently and have a horrible trip.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 30 October 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

Yes, it's probably the only psychedelic I only did once by choice.

Half Dozen, Sunday, 30 October 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

I dunno where the fear of puking comes from - seems pretty standard with non-manmade hallucinogens to me. def. has happened to me plenty of times on mushrooms (and always felt the better for it immediately afterwards)

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Sunday, 30 October 2005 22:59 (twenty years ago)

Wouldnt the puking lessen the effects tho, if you spew the stuff you took back up? (I never puked the one time I had shrooms, but I have gotten v v nauseous on e before)

Tr4yce Kan Googlepro00f (trayce), Sunday, 30 October 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

I dunno from firsthand experience, but apparently not. Certainly with mushrooms the trip didn't really begin until *after* puking... maybe its an extension of the "if you don't cough/you don't get off" axiom re: weed.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Sunday, 30 October 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i've taken it - and, uh, it's pretty goddamn amazing, although incredibly, incredibly intense (or vice versa, actually). i've taken a lot of different things, and it was probably my most powerful drug experience.

you've got to prepare it properly, which takes a long time and is rather laborious, but it really adds a bit to the experience too. you get a MAOI (syrian rue is common, although b. caapi is the actual ayahuasca vine and contains a different ratio of chemicals, leading some, including myself, to prefer it to the comparatively quick and dirty rue), and brew it with a dmt-containing plant source (mimosa hostilis rootbark contains the highest level of alkaloids so it's the easiest - p. viridis is the classic one but really the mimosa's more worthwhile).

the whole mix tastes revolting. like, absolutely revolting. this stuff kinda tastes like stomach acid/vomit. get used to the taste, because you'll be getting it again when you puke it back up. and you WILL puke it back up.

so you hold it down for as long as possible - you want to keep it down so you can absorb as much as you can, but it's coming back up one way or another. the purge is just that, a purge. we're talking projectile vomiting here. but the thing is that it's actually really pleasant in a weird way. when you start feeling sick you just feel bad all over, and then when you throw up...it's honestly completely refreshing and you just feel totally clean, emotionally as well as physically, and kind of euphoric.

shortly after that the actual psychedelic effects kick in. it's sort of different for everyone, like a lot of psychedelics, but for me, my body becomes heavy, heavy, heavy until it feels like it's merged with whatever i'm laying against. at this point i felt like i didn't actually even have a body, and that my consciousness is a little ball of clay being pressed out infinitely in all directions by the ayahuasca. visuals are amazing, the most detailed, beautiful, crystalline jewel-like lattice spreading out over everything, colors spinning, and full-fledged dream movies when you close your eyes. jungle imagery apparently isn't too uncommon, and i've had, for lack of a better word, "spirit jaguars" running through my brain. you cannot remember a time when you didn't feel like you do at the moment. in fact, you have no sense of time whatsoever, to an order of magnitude more than with other psychedelics. i felt like i learned a lot about myself, and had an amazing, gentle, blissful comedown.

honestly, it was one of the most amazing things i've ever experienced. BUT if things had taken a wrong turn, and there's no guarantee whatsoever that with something so incredibly strong it won't, it would be complete, utter hell. so, uh, caveat emptor and all.

blah blah i took a lot of drugs, Sunday, 30 October 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

i thought these were new file sharing protocols at first.

two months pass...

Sometimes I think that I need this medicine. I keep doing things like staying up all night and/or drinking too much and not eating enough b/c I think subconsciously I'm trying to force some meeting with the parts of me that I can't normally access otherwise.

Hmm.

dell, Monday, 26 May 2008 12:42 (eighteen years ago)

Oh man the inaccessible parts of me have been downright terrifying when accessed.

Abbott, Monday, 26 May 2008 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

The only ayahuasca I've got my hands on is that Pelt album.

The only psychedelic drug I've ever tried was mushrooms in chocolate form, and it did nothing but make things not funny. Sucked dude.

nine years pass...

Last night I was offered DMT by someone, and I (stupidly it turns out) thought it sounded fun and bought some. When he gave it to me he said it was something called "changa". I looked it up today and I can't take it. There is a very high risk of death with my antidepressant. Sounds like the ideal way to take it apart from the whole "may kill you" thing. Isn't supposed to make you puke like ayahuasca does.

Colonel Poo, Sunday, 21 January 2018 01:10 (eight years ago)

oh i didn't realize until just now that this was Yage which at least i know about from the beats. fuck that shit, I'm never taking that. I have a good friend who is a shaman in training though whatever the fuck that means. I mean I know that sounds flakey as shit but he's a straight up great person so who knows.

akm, Sunday, 21 January 2018 02:43 (eight years ago)

congrats on not dying, that would have been bad

always wanted to try this stuff after teenage exposure to terence mckenna but it was kinda hard to come by in small-town scotland

grim-n-gritty hooty reboot (bizarro gazzara), Sunday, 21 January 2018 08:58 (eight years ago)

I only know the word Yage from the Future Sound Of London, never wondered what it was :-/

StanM, Sunday, 21 January 2018 09:35 (eight years ago)

I have a friend with a DMT freebase connection but the crack pipe method of ingestion is not a big selling point for going solo.
