Did your colander simply up and leave?
Did you never own one?
What happened?

paulhw (paulhw), Monday, 31 October 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

My vegetable steamer insert doubles as a colander all the time. Also, forks.

hole punch a ziplock bag?

captin crunchheart (dr g), Monday, 31 October 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

saucepan lid held close to edge of saucepan, it's not ideal, but it'll do

Matt (Matt), Monday, 31 October 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

Cheesecloth; skillet spatter guard; paper towels (for draining whey off of yogurt).

the clear plastic bit from inside a salad spinner, a tiny insufficient wire sieve, and once i used a wifebeater to strain carrot juice

Yeah lid lifted up a smidge on the saucepan is a common one - tho not easy if it isnt a good fitting lid or the pot is really heavy.

Can't believe you punks are too cheap for a (seperate) $5 colander....

paulhw (paulhw), Monday, 31 October 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

a rake

captin crunchheart (dr g), Monday, 31 October 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

yeah, spelling mistakes included...!

paulhw (paulhw), Monday, 31 October 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm not too cheap for a colander. I own a colander, and I bet it's better than your colander. But sometimes colander utilisation involves going into the cupboard. And I don't want, or need, to put myself through that sort of stress

My kitchen is the size of a teensy shoebox. No room for fancy extra stuff when vegetable steamer thingies work as well.

Tennis racket? Pantyhose? Cheesecloth? Sponges? An afro?

Things that have only one use need to go. Strainers double as flour sifters, corn-on-the-cob pegs go in the trash, cast iron skillets make good weapons, etc. I'm thinking about throwing away my toaster and buying a good toaster oven because I can't bake a potato in the toaster.

I don't own a colander because a wire sieve works well. I also use it as a sifter and as a strainer for berry and tomato purees. I've used wet floursack toweling (not terribly successful), a slotted spoon (reverse procedure of removing the veg from the water rather than the water from the veg - tedious), the steamer insert from the rice cooker (small and the holes are too big).

"Things that have only one use need to go."

A colander makes an excellent space helmet, you know.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Monday, 31 October 2005 04:49 (twenty years ago)

My last place of employment had an unnecessarily large number, so I never had this problem. Though, whenever I saw the stack, I would think to myself, "that's an ass-load of colanders." It tended to make me chuckle.

we've done colanders, Monday, 31 October 2005 08:23 (twenty years ago)

I avoid the lack of colander problem by owning three of them.

I solved the space issue by buying this beauty, which folds flat
