TS: Halloween vs Bonfire Night

When I was little I thought it was mighty inconsiderate to have these two celebrations next to each other - couldn't they have organised it a little better?

Halloween's genesis is probably more noble, but Bonfire night's celebrations are a lot cooler.

I like the idea of Bonfire Night, and I like Bonfires, but I HATE HATE HATE fireworks, and I love free candy, so I'm going to have to plump for Halloween.

bonfire night. i never go out, i like to sit in and listen to all the bangs and fizzes and imagine i'm back in the blitz.

halloween is usually always a complete let down. us brits, well in my town anyway, tend to only celebrate it very half heartedly. nobody really cares enough about it.

Bonfire night, deffo. There's a massive fireworks display out on the heath near our house this Saturday, we're having lots of people round after to drink wine until the early hours. Lovely.

Halloween conjures horrific images of hordes of drunken girls in flashing devil horns. Ugh.

Bonfire night: fireworks, treacle toffee and burning effigies of catholics.

Hallowe'en: being harassed by little fvckers for sweets.

Bonfire night wins, obv.

Whoever invented flashing devil horns needs a pair shoving up their arse.

RickyT (RickyT), Monday, 31 October 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

i used to love playing with fire when i was younger so it has to be bonfire night.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Monday, 31 October 2005 10:00 (twenty years ago)

gotta be bonfire night, though we seem to get fireworks for six months of the year round these parts. i went up highgate hill during the evening last year and it was amazing -- you could see multiple firework displays all over london.

Bonfire night.

We've noticed here that people are setting fireworks off early a lot less now that they can only be sold from two weeks beforehand.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Monday, 31 October 2005 10:04 (twenty years ago)

where? in england? i'm sure we've had 'em for more than that where i live.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 31 October 2005 10:18 (twenty years ago)

i've noticed less fireworks this year also. i think there were a lot of large events taking place this past weekend anyway.

i can never understand people setting them off in the day time, what a waste.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 31 October 2005 10:20 (twenty years ago)

I heard the fireworks going off all weekend round here, day and night. I haven't noticed their frequency diminishing in recent years tho.

And also, tomorrow is Diwali, just to throw an addition firecracker in the street...

Which would definitely win, if put up against the other two.

Ashamedly I don't know anything about Diwali.

*scurries to wiki*

Oh wow, that is quite cool. Better than either of our two, but an unfair fight since both Halloween and Bonfire Night are largely secular.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Monday, 31 October 2005 13:45 (twenty years ago)

Bonfire Night? Secular? It's all about BURNING POPEISTS!!!

Plus, Halloween is Pagan, but nominally Christian.

If you're *really* pagan you call it Samhain.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Monday, 31 October 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

You know, I was going to say that, but didn't want to come off like a goff. :-P

I was DJing last night and Satan came up to the DJ box. He spoke in a Spanish accent and said "TECHNO ELECTRO MINIMAL??? YES!!!"

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 31 October 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Hey, you don't *have* to be a goth to be pagan.

(although I wouldn't say I'm pagan myself, but I might be if I knew more about it)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Monday, 31 October 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

no-one has done a 'bonfire riddim', more's the pity.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 31 October 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

I guess Halloween is worth a fight, but Bonfire Night is NOT a religious festival!

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Monday, 31 October 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

it is and it isn't. mostly isn't.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Monday, 31 October 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

BONFIRE RIDDIM IS HOMOPHOBIC

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 31 October 2005 14:41 (twenty years ago)

I am now going to start calling Shimura Curves BONFIRE RIDDIM.

Not homophobic, but popeophobia, yes. Popophobic, no, we love the Pop.
