Does anyone know how to cure an ipod that locks up?

It's a 40Gb model. About every 5 tracks, it keeps playing fine but the display isn't updated with the track progress. Also it won't accept any instructions like volume up/down, next track etc. Then when it gets to the end of the track it will just wait, not playing, for 1nything from 10 secs to a few minutes.

I updated to new ipod s/ware yesterday, which seems to have started the problem. Also, could it be too full - there is only room for a track or two on there.

Cheers in advance!!

Haha, slocki, we're in the same boat. Except mine works intermittently.

think you're supposed to leave a good amount of space for buffering

don't have an iPod, though, so I don't actually know

read the forums at apple.com or ipodlounge. i think you have to reset the OS on the iPod by holding down all 4 buttons or something like that. i did this a while ago and it cured my battery life problem and intermittent stopping problem that you're having. there are several step by step guides to doing this online. iPOdlounge may be your best bet. i think it's http://www.ilounge.com but it should be easy to google.

And here I am, with an unhappy iPod frowning silently back at me. 18 months on and the thing is now a slick-looking paper weight. Having gone through all the desperate attempts to revive it, it appears the hard drive on these things just craps out (which yours might be suffering from as well). How many times have we heard this story?

Try resetting it. Plug it into an outlet, not your computer. Move the turn the "Hold" button on then off, and then press, simultaneously, "Menu" and "Play." Hold these down for 10 seconds. It should reset. Next step is to wipe the units harddrive, which you can do through your computer and iPod Updater.

I'v had problems with my ipod too. It liked to freeze up on me. Usually I had to move the hold swith from on to off and that would unlock it. However, it became so annoying because it would lock up all the time. I tried restoring and updating the software but it didn't help. I finally brought it back to the Apple store. They told me it was probably a software problem and gave me a new ipod. So far no problems. But these things are too damn sensitive

You need to leave AT THE LEAST something like a gig of free space

My 2-year old 10 GB ipod has only 168KB free, and it generally does OK. It's frozen a couple of times in the last 6 months, and when it does it eventually comes back without me reseting it. I do a lot of things when it happened, like locking and unlocking and trying to turn it off (holding the pause button) but nothing helps right when I do it, it just starts working again within a minute or so.

It's fixed. itunes said that it had NO free-space, despite saying there was about 100 Mb free last time I looked. I cleared a couple of albums off there and it's working fine now. Thanks for yr advice!
