I put some turmeric/cinnamon in my coffee on a morning, god knows if it does me any good - but I likes it, and am not deed yet.

I buy it fresh and after chopping it my fingers go orange. So probably looks like I smoke heavily.Just found out that one of the main supermarkets in town and presumably across the country has started seling the fresh stuff in pretty large bags for €2. Haven't seen it in there before.

I've been noticing it fresh everywhere too. The last time we got it we juiced it all and kept it in the fridge to randomly put in teas or smoothies. I don't know if it's less potent after juicing but we will probably stick to the powder since it was such a pain to keep things clean.

My wife does this! It makes her hands look like a Simpson. Then she chops it up, throws it in the dehydrator, and once it's dry, grinds it in a coffee grinder. Much more flavorful than the stuff from the grocery store. Although in the last few years, the price has been going up. I think she tried to grow her own from the rhizome, but I don't know what happened to that project.
We haven't seen fresh turmeric locally though. Been buying it off amazon.

I was just reading a book that goes in on turmeric preventing cancer, apparently you'd need to eat like 50 curries a day to get a dose close enough to do anything

i did a little report for a bio class a couple years ago about whether or not capsaicin may help fight cancer. far as i know the science is not 100% in, but it's been shown to cause apoptosis in cancer cells. probably similar to the effect of circumin. so just regular consumption of these delicious foodstuffs /may/ do something to stave off/help (?) xpst

I still really like turmeric too even if the pros are greatly exaggerated. Hmmm, I've never taken any medication or supplements regularly in my life but recently (last week) just started with milk thistle, probiotics and a multivitamin. Who knows if anything works but I figure those and turmeric are least risk/most reward.

Turmeric is interesting, but as with other polyphenols its poorly absorbed and probably has more effect through changing the composition of the gut microbiota than through any direct effects on cells. There are some Indian studies where turmeric paste is a useful topical treatment for skin tumors, where direct effects are plausible.

I buy the whole root. Sometimes I'll make an Indian pickle with diced turmeric, diced ginger, fennel seeds, salt, and oil.
The stain does come out, like most, with undiluted bleach. But I have one of those semi-disposable flexible polyethylene pilfered from my stepmother's house that I use with the turmeric.
