defend the indefensible: AXE, TAG, BOD-MAN, other "body sprays" marketed to horny 14-year-old guys

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 12 January 2006 02:58 (twenty years ago)

Haha, my 14-year-old brother wears Axe (Lynx in the UK). We got him to stop using the spray, so he now uses the Axe deoderant stick.

naus (Robert T), Thursday, 12 January 2006 03:06 (twenty years ago)

ha my 29year old brother wears Lynx. everyone suffocates.

weird i just had a convo this week about axe!
"axe is like pine-sol but for human bodies"
"yeah, broke human bodies"

LC, Thursday, 12 January 2006 03:35 (twenty years ago)

hahaha!

As far as hygiene products go, the less smelly/scented, the better, personally. I love the whole idea of "unscented" or "fragrance-free" - as if such a thing is really possible, but I like how these products smell like something approximating "nothing."*

My vote for thorough cleanliness has to go to a good ol' detachable showerhead.

*There is this bottled water in Europe called Spa Water - why is it so good? Because it really does taste like NOTHING, not even like water, or rather, what water should taste like, clear, nothing, hardly there at all.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Thursday, 12 January 2006 05:54 (twenty years ago)

I have used neither deodorant nor anti-perspirant since 10th grade. I am unscented.

gbx (skowly), Thursday, 12 January 2006 06:01 (twenty years ago)

I prefer deodorant without seriously strong scents, and not anti-perspirant. You're body NEEDS to sweat sometimes - let it.

Shave cream: Aveeno Therapeutic Shave Gel - has no artificial smells, and does a GREAT job helping to avoid irritation. It doesn't dry your face out, softens the whiskers up well, and leaves your skin smooth. And its no more expensive than other shave gels.

After-shave balm: Aveeda After-shave Balm - has real aloe and lavender. Smells nice, but not fake or overpowering, and does a nice job of keeping the skin unirritated.

Hair - American Crew Grooming Cream - kind of a wax that, when applied in the right amount, does a nice job of keeping your hair under control without looking too guido-ish.

Shampoo: Usually Herbal Essences, followed by some conditioner - whatever the wife has that week. The barbers all tell me I have REALLY nice hair.

It may seem like a lot, but I find its a nice way to ease into the morning. Nice smells and being clean are simple luxuries I provide myself.

girls should be wary of most deodorants as they contain aluminium, its been linked with breast cancer.

you'd probably be hard-pressed to come up with a more irrational prejudice, but i regard non-Colgate toothpaste as lower class, somehow. gel, too, though that's more yer standard rockism. maybe it's one of those brand loyalties that hooks you earliest in your consciousness. or maybe my bullshit detector was set off really early by afternoon-television kids-love-[insert competitor here]!

naus (Robert T), Friday, 13 January 2006 03:48 (twenty years ago)

Gabbneb, I hated Crest after being forced to use it my whole life as a kid...that crappy pasty paste stuff that tasted like chaulk...I pretty much ran from that brand with everything I had when I moved out of the house.

But the cinnamon burst Crest gel tastes like Big Red.

How can anyone brush with paste (instead of gel), I can't figure.

don weiner (don weiner), Friday, 13 January 2006 03:54 (twenty years ago)

I prefer paste to gel, unless it's that gel with the large grits inside. It might have something to do with the (unfounded?) idea that gel just isn't abrasive enough to be effective.

naus (Robert T), Friday, 13 January 2006 03:56 (twenty years ago)

i agree, crest is nasty. i think gabb is right about colgate... it just seems more potent than other toothpastes i've tried.

yvette yreka (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 13 January 2006 03:57 (twenty years ago)

I will not use a toothpaste that has not been endorsed by either the American or Canadian Dental Associations. Most whitening toothpastes are not.

naus (Robert T), Friday, 13 January 2006 04:06 (twenty years ago)

Breath Palette toothpaste is my new extravagance. No SLS, gel based, and 31 different true flavors like bitter chocolate, vanilla, and pumpkin pudding. Spendy though.

Do you need a bartender to use Breath Palette?
