Have you ever been bitten by an animal?

I was chewed slightly by a black labrador when I was five. It broke the skin a little on my hand and I had to have a tetanus injection.

I've been bitten by a guinea pig, a budgie, a cockatiel and more exotically, a rhea. Never anything serious.

tell me about getting bitten. Anyone been savagely mauled?

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Thursday, 12 January 2006 11:57 (twenty years ago)

Are humans animals?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 12 January 2006 11:59 (twenty years ago)

i was bitten by a chipmunk. it didn't break the skin. it just kind of dangled from my finger.

mason storm (mason storm), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:01 (twenty years ago)

I was once bitten by several humans in one night. It was all pleasurable though.

I've also been bitten by a few cats, but who hasn't?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:03 (twenty years ago)

dog (thought my hand was a piece of toast, and why i HATE dogs)
squirrel, found in a trap - wasn't in best of moods
rat, wild and domestic, probably worst bite ever.
cat - all the time when i owned one

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:05 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, I've been bitten by a cat. Evil, vindictive little creature.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:07 (twenty years ago)

Cats will bite you out of love. And also out of murderous rage.

robster (robster), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:09 (twenty years ago)

She was clamped to my hand with her ears back. She'd rolled over on her back all cute for me to rub her tummy, as soon as my hand was there she grabbed it with all four feet and sunk her teeth in. So I pinged her nose.

She also launches herself at any feet hanging out of the bed in the middle of the night.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:18 (twenty years ago)

Dogs, cats, baby lions, you know how it is. Been nipped by all of them, but none of them badly.

Beauty and the Beastliness (kate), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:19 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah when a cats biting you and rolls on its back and then starts scraping you with its hind legs, i get a bit anxious then when i can't escape its wrath.

xpost baby lions? ouch

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:20 (twenty years ago)

I was bitten by my mum's dog. Part of my lip was dangling by a thread. They stitched it back on. It looks better than before, to be honest. As it was my fault, I didn't want to get rid of the dog. We kept him for another 9 yrs or so until he had to be put to sleep. RIP, Basiel. :-(

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:34 (twenty years ago)

The baby lions in question were only about the size of medium sized dogs. And they were being playful, there was no damage.

Beauty and the Beastliness (kate), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:35 (twenty years ago)

Dog, cat, hamster, small child.

I've been pecked by a few (feathered variety) birds in my time, too.

Lion cubs are gorgeous. I wish I had one as a pet.

C J (C J), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:36 (twenty years ago)

The problem with baby lions is that they grow up to be ADULT LIONS which are somewhat less cute and friendly.

Beauty and the Beastliness (kate), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:38 (twenty years ago)

(Though I would love to have a baby/pygmy elephant, if we are talking about inappropriate pets.)

Beauty and the Beastliness (kate), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:38 (twenty years ago)

A dog, a few weeks ago - I was very shaken but not badly hurt. And a ferret when I was 13 - it stuck its teeth into my wrist and wouldn't let go, so I literally swung it round the room until it came off. Bloody animal.

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:39 (twenty years ago)

Who was the TV sleb who was bitten by a ferret during a chat show? Parky? Russell Harty? I can't remember.

C J (C J), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:40 (twenty years ago)

parky was an emu

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:44 (twenty years ago)

small horrid spoiled yappy-type-dog belonging to horrid spoiled family down the road when i was about 8 or 9. this dog bit EVERYONE that didn't live in the horrid house afaik, i think my bro was bitten by it a few weeks before i was.

emsk ( emsk), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:46 (twenty years ago)

I had a newspaper delivery route when I was 12, and I was once chased and bitten by a golden lab belonging to one of my customers. Left a couple of large bite marks on my left butt cheek; I had to go get a tetanus booster, but luckily the dog had its shot records up to date so no rabies worries.

phil d. (Phil D.), Thursday, 12 January 2006 12:48 (twenty years ago)

An evil pony when I was learning to ride when I was wee and in love with them. I was just about to launch myself up into the saddle when the bastard turned its head around and bit my bum. Thank heavens for denim!!! I was too embarrassed to tell anyone so I had to get into the saddle without turning my back on his head, which was no mean feat.

Guinea pig nips, cats, I think that's it.

Vicky (Vicky), Thursday, 12 January 2006 13:03 (twenty years ago)

Cats: on a weekly basis. But I tend to treat cat bites differently to other animal attacks. It's just part of their loveable independant nature!

'And they're only playing - if they really meant it they could take your hand off' as I have been known to say to victims desperately trying to stem the blood.

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Thursday, 12 January 2006 13:09 (twenty years ago)

My cat often bites me when playing. He doesn't usually break the skin, though, because I wrap my hand up in a towel or something first.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 12 January 2006 13:11 (twenty years ago)

Small unknown spider. Got a strange itching on my leg when I was about 10, couple of days later there was a circle of pimple-like things (about 3-4 cm diameter) around a reddened bit of skin with a tiny white dot in the middle. Ointment made the whole thing disappear a couple weeks later, still don't know what kind of spider it was. We don't usually have poisonous spiders over here, I think.

Those kinds of circles are called "sint katrienewiel" over here, don't know what that is in English, since a Catherine wheel is a "breaking wheel," a medieval torture device. (The Flemish name must have been inspired by that, though)

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 12 January 2006 13:21 (twenty years ago)

Catherine Wheels are whirly fireworks you nail to a post!

C J (C J), Thursday, 12 January 2006 13:27 (twenty years ago)

*And* torture devices, of course.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 12 January 2006 13:29 (twenty years ago)

Cool! So Saint Catherine was nailed to a post and set alight & spinning?

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 12 January 2006 13:32 (twenty years ago)

She was broken on a wheel, I thought.

Because she out-argued too many philosophers. (I like her, as you might be able to tell.)

Beauty and the Beastliness (kate), Thursday, 12 January 2006 13:35 (twenty years ago)

Sadly, no

(xpost)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 12 January 2006 13:36 (twenty years ago)

Ah, ok. So is there an English word for a circle of red skin surrounded by pimples, caused by an animal bite or some infection in the middle? (you know, like a circle of mushrooms around a tree stump, but on your skin and without mushrooms or tree stump)

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 12 January 2006 13:40 (twenty years ago)

the black death?

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 12 January 2006 13:43 (twenty years ago)

Yup, I've had The Black Death after a spider bite when I was 10.

(thanks, sounds a lot cooler now :-) )

StanM (StanM), Thursday, 12 January 2006 13:49 (twenty years ago)

Ringworm

C J (C J), Thursday, 12 January 2006 13:51 (twenty years ago)

A friend's dog bit my face about 6 weeks ago and now I have a scar on my lip. It's little, but definitely there. About 1/2 inch, vertical, underneath my left nostril.

Facial scars on women: C/D?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 12 January 2006 14:48 (twenty years ago)

I was bitten on the elbow by a very large Afghan hound when I was five. The dog was bigger than me too. I was very small at the age of five.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 12 January 2006 15:56 (twenty years ago)

I got bitten by a squirrel when I was a kid. It lived in our garden and would come and feed out of your hand, but I made the mistake of trying to stroke it once. I had to shake it off my hand, it wouldn't let go.

chap who would dare to work for the man (chap), Thursday, 12 January 2006 16:05 (twenty years ago)

I am interested in the scar issue -- what's the concensus on scars? Should I attempt to have it removed? What would this entail? Should I keep it because it makes me look tough and gives me character, or get rid of it because it looks like I have a tiny little nosebleed all the time?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 12 January 2006 16:15 (twenty years ago)

I think you should keep the scar. It's a story isn't it? I have a visible thread vein just under my nostril, I think it's dead noticable but you can only see it if you look for it.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Thursday, 12 January 2006 16:23 (twenty years ago)

A highland terrier bit through my lip when I was about twelve. I never got stitches, and it left a tiny white scar that looks kind of like the Star Trek insignia.

Laura H. (laurah), Thursday, 12 January 2006 16:25 (twenty years ago)

Part of what upsets me about the scar is that it's not just discolored, it's raised. Like a tiny mountain range. Should I have gone to (the) hospital for stitches?

I know it could have been so much worse and the dog could have eaten my entire face off or left me eyeless and I am grateful for that. Still though, this is what I have to look at every day and I didn't really bargain for a permanent scar when I went over to my friends' house for dinner that night.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 12 January 2006 16:27 (twenty years ago)

That said, I'm still thinking of just letting it be. I guess it's a story.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 12 January 2006 16:27 (twenty years ago)

Ste, how can a rat be wild and domestic? Or did you get bitten by one of each?

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 12 January 2006 16:29 (twenty years ago)

yes, by a squirrel i was feeding. let this be a lesson to all: when wild animals become to accustomed to being fed peanuts, they will follow you around the park after they know you're holding. and when you try to feed them from your hand, they may jump on your arm and dig in with paws and teeth

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 12 January 2006 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Amanda, 6 weeks isn't very long in the scarring scheme of things, is it? Just because it's still a bit visible now doesn't mean it will be by summer etc although you could use one of those creams if you wanted, I suppose.

I think I'm partial to the little scars you see on people's chins or lips or eyebrow ridges, clearly old old childhood wounds from running into/falling off of things. They're sort of endearing.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 12 January 2006 16:35 (twenty years ago)

I guess I'll let it go a while. It's just new and I haven't had 20 years to get used to it. Yet.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 12 January 2006 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Amanda, try some vitamin K gel for awhile. It will lessen the redness. Scars do fade over time, and the plastic surgery to fix them creates more scars in the short term.

I've been bitten by: cats, dogs, goats, foals, horses, rabbits, a "pet" skunk, and one of my own children. Old scars all over my hands, arms, and legs.

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 12 January 2006 16:51 (twenty years ago)

kelsey, yes sorry it was one of each. the domestic rat had the most vicous bite, it belonged to my house mate. unwisely he'd been given it when it was already quite old and unluckily for the rat it bit him once too often (last time was right in the bridge of his nose, ow ow) and so he had to have it, ahem, put it down.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 12 January 2006 16:54 (twenty years ago)

What, crushed underfoot and thrown out with the garbage?

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Thursday, 12 January 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

I think scars on girls are cool, they add to the persona. Imperfections are often attractive.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 12 January 2006 17:24 (twenty years ago)

I don't like my scar :(

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 12 January 2006 17:39 (twenty years ago)

It's not from an animal bite though.

I've been nipped by a rat and a hamster, and chewed playfully by puppies, but that's it.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 12 January 2006 17:40 (twenty years ago)

I was mauled by a dog as a teenager, whilst out delivering evangelical church newsletters. A passer-by shouted at me mid-maul because the dog was making too much noise.

Yes, I apologised.

Nicholas Passant, Thursday, 12 January 2006 17:54 (twenty years ago)

I was badly bitten by the dog of a family friend when I was ten. Eight or nine stitches on my upper lip, plus one on my cheek and one under my lower lip. It was a mess, and the doctor who stitched me up couldn't get my lip lined up properly and it's still a bit wonky 20 years later but only obvious if you really look. We were visiting their house, I was scratching the dog's ears, it very abruptly turned around and clamped it's jaw shut on my face. A visit to the vet turned up that the dog had a vertebrae out of position in it's neck, and I must have tweaked a pinched nerve or something. They didn't put the dog down, but they did offer to... I hated big dogs for years and have twice kicked agressive dogs in the teeth (both times in public parks, once when a german shepherd was viciously attacking a puppy I was walking), but now I love them plenty.

Also, the minnows at my parents' cottage nibble on my toes, but I'm not sure if their intentions are malicious.

superultramega (superultramarinated), Thursday, 12 January 2006 18:06 (twenty years ago)

"C'mere Kipper," said the chauffer, picking up the cat. The cat got frightened, bit the chauffer's thumb, then farted.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 12 January 2006 18:16 (twenty years ago)

my new favorite words ever = "evil pony"

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 12 January 2006 18:17 (twenty years ago)

I was chased, knocked down and had my head chewed on for a bit by an English bulldog once when I was five. My father and the dog's owner pulled the dog off of me after a few seconds, but it seemed like an eternity.

truck-patch pixel farmer (Rock Hardy), Friday, 13 January 2006 02:25 (twenty years ago)

my puppy used to bite me with his little needle baby teeth, but only as a joke.

estela (estela), Friday, 13 January 2006 02:49 (twenty years ago)

I was bitten by a squirrel when I was 12. I was trying to feed it peanut butter crackers. It ate the cracker for a while & then bit my on the ring finger (hard enough to break the skin & draw blood). My mom called the rabies hotline & they told her not to worry because I probably didn't have rabies & if I did I would be dead in 24 hours and there was nothing they could do about it. This resulted in a race to the hospital & some very painful shots.

I was also bitten by a giraffe at Parc Safari when I was 14. It stuck its head through our car window & wouldn't take it out. It ate a bag of saltine crackers and then tried to eat my dad's wallet. I made a grab & saved it, but he bit my hand. Then he ate our Parc Safari map before we managed to push his head out of the window.

jay blanchard (jay blanchard), Friday, 13 January 2006 04:55 (twenty years ago)

I got bitten by a pony in a Nativity scene once. Luckily it didn't clamp down too hard.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Friday, 13 January 2006 05:02 (twenty years ago)

Pit Bull. I hate those things.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 13 January 2006 05:57 (twenty years ago)

i've been bitten by my cats quite a few times, but they never break the skin or anything. and um i imagine everyone's been bitten by a few insects.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 13 January 2006 09:07 (twenty years ago)

There was a pony in the Nativity story? I need to reread that stuff, it's been a while.

StanM (StanM), Friday, 13 January 2006 09:11 (twenty years ago)

Rumpie, yeah something like that

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 13 January 2006 09:12 (twenty years ago)

(ok, sorry. There was also a duck, a llama and a camel in the nativity story, apparently.

StanM (StanM), Friday, 13 January 2006 09:13 (twenty years ago)
