Too much Elvis 'led to stabbing'
From: AAP

January 10, 2006

A WOMAN who allegedly stabbed her partner six times because he repeatedly played an Elvis Presley song will face a West Australian court today.
Police will allege the woman stabbed her 35-year-old partner with a pair of scissors during an argument over him playing Burning Love over and over again.

The woman would appear in a magistrate's court in Northam, 97km north east of Perth, charged with unlawful wounding, WA police said.

The man was treated at Northam hospital for lacerations to his head, back and legs, police said.

The song police allege to be behind the incident was recorded in 1972, reached No.2 on the US charts and contains the lyrics:

The flames are reaching my body
Please won't you help me
I feel like I'm slipping away
It's hard to breathe
And my chest is a-heaving.

The chorus is:

I'm burning a hole where I lay.
Cause your kisses lift me higher
Like the sweet song of a choir
You light my morning sky
With burning love.

Well, really, I mean who hasn't wanted to stab a person who plays the same song on repeat endlessly, am I right or am I right?

"Elvis was a hero to most but he never meant shit to me, you see straight up racist".

Is it possible to like Public Enemy and Elvis? :)

I can't get the image out of my head of that Fast Show skit where Ralph gets drunk and gets up and sings "Burning Love" to Ted on the pub karaoke, now.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 13 January 2006 04:24 (twenty years ago)

(and i know i've prob pointed this out about a million times on ilm but that admittedly awesome PE line is complete slander! even albert goldman didn't claim elvis was racist!)

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 13 January 2006 04:25 (twenty years ago)

I dont hate Elvis but I certainly have no interest in him whatsoever.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 13 January 2006 05:12 (twenty years ago)

that's too bad trayce, when i stopped off at burger king this morning he told me he was hoping you'd take his picture! :(

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 13 January 2006 09:02 (twenty years ago)

J.D.: I thought it was common knowledge that Elvis refused to date women who had been with black men? Or is that just a nasty rumour?

StanM (StanM), Friday, 13 January 2006 09:35 (twenty years ago)

Also check the "Sleeper v Public Enemy" thread on ILM for a debate on that line,

.. and it wasn't even true! Chuck has done various 'tributes' to Elvis since (verbal, not musical)

i don't remember that story stan, but it's not impossible - there's no denying elvis's attitudes toward women were pretty weird. but even if it were true you'd have to balance that against the fact that none of all the other hundreds of thousands of anecdotes about elvis in print (apart from the discredited "buy my records and shine my shoes" story) paint him as a racist. and he frequently voiced his admiration for musicians like bb king and arthur crudup, saying he could never hope to be that good. considering he grew up in a time and place where racism was basically accepted by most people around him, that's pretty remarkable. in fact, sam phillips famously said that he felt elvis's lack of prejudice was the most unusual and important thing about him.

Good point, that. Often forgotten.

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Friday, 13 January 2006 10:33 (twenty years ago)

i don't have much use for elvis costello.

lou costello on the other hand was awesome!

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Friday, 13 January 2006 10:57 (twenty years ago)

... nah, don't like the Costelli either

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Friday, 13 January 2006 11:01 (twenty years ago)

The people in that news story clearly had much larger problems here. Like those nice people in that Canadian cartoon I can never remember the name of. You know the one where she takes her eyes out and shakes them, and he keeps sawing the furniture, and they drive each other crazy?

My Dad doesn't really like Elvis, because my mother always liked him so much. I think that kind of low-level jealousy is cute, actually.
