I have an oven with a 'clean' setting on the dial but no instructions. If I set it to clean and then leave the apartment can I trust it not to do anything too radical?

The door usually locks and they heat up to over 800 deg F. It's usually recommended that somebody hang around, just in case.

Ah, ok, thanks. Do you think it will clean up even the godawful mess left when the honey/soy chicken dribbled over the edge of the pan, or should I try to make a start on that beforehand? Also, do you know roughly how long it should take?

BTW, the fact that I can picture your amazing kitchen when reading your answer makes you a very authoritative kitchen info source.

Yeah, a self cleaning oven just gets so hot that it burns all the food stuck inside to ash. Then you wipe your ash when you're finished.

This says to wipe up spills first or the oven will smoke - http://ask.yahoo.com/20030102.html
Right, Marigolds.

Haha, it's all about the image ;)
I'm wondering about the original poster's fumes. Maybe he used oven cleaner+self-cleaning?

Maybe Jenny and yahoo are otm and he left some kind of mess in there before turning it on. But that's smoke, not fumes.
