S/D - Store bought Pizzas!

On a bit of a budget now, and have cut down on takeaways/eating out.

I love pizza, have made my own pizza a few times but for sheer convenience we've been buying pizzas from the supermarket. My essential topping is pepperoni.

Search: Pizza Express American Hot.

Destroy: Marks and Spencers Hot & Spicy

I like the Goodfellas range for shop bought pizza.

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 10:15 (twenty years ago)

there's this horrible pizza i've had once called Reggio's, which is perpetually on sale cheap at Ralph's, advertising itself as Chicago-style pizza. the worst stuff i've ever had and not remotely chicago-style.

i like tombstone.

gear (gear), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 10:25 (twenty years ago)

one word: dr. oetker

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 10:27 (twenty years ago)

Pink, have you tried the big square Goodfellas pizzas? I think they're called 'Takeaway' or something similar. So far i've only had the round ones which are lovely.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 10:31 (twenty years ago)

I examined a dr. oetker for some time in Somerfield the other day, but put it back in favour of the Somerfield Pepperoni.

If they come recommended I shall try them. Soon.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 10:34 (twenty years ago)

buy any old cheap shit pizza and put a shitload of extra cheese plus whatever you can find in the fridge on top. shop-bought pizzas are always bobbins if you eat them as they are, but with the right treatment you can make 'em more than edible.

emsk ( emsk), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 10:35 (twenty years ago)

I always grind dried chilli flakes on my pizzas and have jars of red and green jalepenos on standby. Sometimes, but not always I'm forced to add cheese.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 10:42 (twenty years ago)

It's not the topping that's the issue for me, it's the base. Cheap & nasty pizzas have rubbish bases.

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 10:42 (twenty years ago)

That's why I love the Pizza Express ones - they have really nice, thin bases.

I find most store bought deep pan pizzas have awful bases.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 11:15 (twenty years ago)

Oh, the Sainsburys posh ones are really, really, good. Man! I've got two sitting in my freezer (so they will probably be rubbish now) because my stoves is broken. They have really nice, thick crusts.

filled the fjords of my brain (kate), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 11:17 (twenty years ago)

Yup, Goodfellas (frozen) & Sainsburys (fresh) are best, I think.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 11:48 (twenty years ago)

rumpie threads should have their own catagory

howell huser (chaki), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 11:49 (twenty years ago)

Such as?

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 11:56 (twenty years ago)

Destroy x 1000: Waitrose own-brand frozen pizza. Oily, limp and taste distinctly of soap.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 11:57 (twenty years ago)

What flavour of soap?

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 12:03 (twenty years ago)

Waitrose non-frozen mushroom and mascarpone is as good as shop pizza gets, though!

M Carty (mj_c), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 12:05 (twenty years ago)

No, Sainsburys Garlic Mushroom and Mascarpone PWNS Waitrose.

filled the fjords of my brain (kate), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 12:06 (twenty years ago)

Just soapy soap.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 12:08 (twenty years ago)

Sainsburys Pepperoni - add red jalepenos, a little chorizo, some chopped birds eye chillis and a sprinkling of parmesan - yumness.

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 12:32 (twenty years ago)

safeway used to stock a cheap but delivious brand of chilled pizzas, their pepperoni was a freezer staple for a long time, but they disappeared when those brutish northern barbarians Morrisons usurped the beloved chain.

i am not a nugget (stevie), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 13:05 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, Safeway pizzas went to sh*t after they were bought out, which was a huge shame, as I used to love theirs. I would even buy the rubbish pizzas and then load up the base with all kinds of toppings.

filled the fjords of my brain (kate), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 13:08 (twenty years ago)

Goodfellas always seem to have those polystyrene dustbin-lid style thick bases with crusts that become jagged weapons of soft-tissue destruction in yr mouth. Thick base is foul. Dr Oetker's seconded: they're cheap and the range is basic but they're gorgeous, with perfect thin bases.

Battle Raper II (noodle vague), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 13:13 (twenty years ago)

Considerable x-postage: No Sainsbury's near me, but I'll try their mushroom + garlic + mascarpone combo next time I have the chance. Somerfield used to do an excellent garlic mushroom one too.

M Carty (mj_c), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 13:15 (twenty years ago)

rumpie threads should have their own catagory

I'm still curious.....

Rumpie (lil drummer girl parumpumpumpu), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 13:27 (twenty years ago)

I think that would be an awesome idea - but mainly because I usually really enjoy Rumpie threads!

filled the fjords of my brain (kate), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 13:32 (twenty years ago)

Why thank you Kate!

This is a problem with all frozen deep pan pizzas, but if you are careful not to burn them and let them cool down a bit before you start eating they don't destroy your mouth too much.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 14:24 (twenty years ago)

The commercials for Dr.Oetker's products in Germany used to have the slogan "long live Dr.Oetker". No joke.

Destroy FOX DELUXE PIZZAS

HAKKEBOFFER (eman), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 17:25 (twenty years ago)

I tend to buy either Red Baron or Home Run Inn.

R. Kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Is Tree Tavern still around in the US? That was the first pizza I ever learned to love.

filled the fjords of my brain (kate), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 17:32 (twenty years ago)

do you also fantasize about the red baron himself like in those old tv commercials?

my sister used to put mustard and carrots on slices of frozen pizza. she's a weird chick.

cancer prone fat guy (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 18:14 (twenty years ago)

totino's crisp crust party pizzas, despite obvious faults, have been life savers many a drunken/drugsy night. and they're like 90 cents apiece. toss some extra cheese on there if available and some jalapenos and there you go. you'll think, at 2 a.m., that it's the best thing you ever ate.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 18:36 (twenty years ago)

california pizza kitchen's frozen pizzas are good. some of the amy's pizzas are also good.

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 21:25 (twenty years ago)

my dad often regails me with his tale of how he once got served a deep-fat-fried pizza one time on the Isle Of Wight.

Louis Giomblechett and his kerayzy friends (dog latin), Thursday, 19 January 2006 00:21 (twenty years ago)

Your Dad's tale is not worth telling. Probably 10,000 deep-fried pizzas per week are served in Glasgow. Toppings include tuna and corn and some of them even have a fried egg on them. Batter is optional.

everything, Thursday, 19 January 2006 01:07 (twenty years ago)

not as optional as you may think

depends how wide you are

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 19 January 2006 01:10 (twenty years ago)

Many people seem to make pizza from scratch. If you have salad on pizza, it turns out like wilted greens.

youn, Thursday, 19 January 2006 01:16 (twenty years ago)

x-post -- I am revolted.

Trader Joe's carries a few good ones. There's one called Pizza Olympiad that's a good small size with peppers, olives and feta mixed with mozzarella. Add a little Parmesan and some spices of your choice and them's good eating.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 January 2006 01:18 (twenty years ago)

i have a TJ's pizza in my freezer. i think it's the pesto one.

danielle the animal steel (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 19 January 2006 01:24 (twenty years ago)

i like the whole foods "365" pizzas better tho.

danielle the animal steel (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 19 January 2006 01:24 (twenty years ago)

tesco pizza tuscana is probably the best pizza i've ever had, shop bought or freshly made.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 19 January 2006 01:28 (twenty years ago)

i prefer the trader joe's trader giotto's frozen pizzas. which are imported from Italy.

no bones, Thursday, 19 January 2006 01:52 (twenty years ago)

i just took one out of the oven. almost had crappy take out but the power managed to come back on.

no bones, Thursday, 19 January 2006 01:55 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the Italian pizzas at TJ's are the best. Also their corn crust pizzas in the non-frozen cold cases are good. Vicolo's brand corn crust pizzas are good, but kind of pricey. I like CPK's white pizzas for adding my own toppings.

nickn (nickn), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:01 (twenty years ago)

Destroy: Those pizzas that you have to put on a baking tray or else they slop through the oven grille and cause a fantastic mess.

Louis Giomblechett and his kerayzy friends (dog latin), Thursday, 19 January 2006 08:58 (twenty years ago)

Are you in England? Can't you buy pizza by the slice there? Cos I find (in the US) that supermarket pizzas $3-4ish) are much worse than a $2slice (or 2 of 'em).

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 20 January 2006 20:41 (twenty years ago)

trader giotto's roasted vegetable pizza + leftover queso blanco (diced) + fresh basil (hand-shredded) = saturday afternoon heaven
