Neil Jordan's "Breakfast on Pluto"

One of the year's most criminally underappreciated films; it's cratered at the American b.o. Jordan and Cillian Murphy should be getting some of the prizes going to you-know-who. Best needledrop soundtrack in years. I can't wait to read the McCabe novel to pick up the 5-10% of dialogue lost on me.

Yeah that was my biggest problem with the movie. I was DESPERATELY wanting sub-titles (esp. since the speakers in the theater I saw it in were FUCKED) and I'll be eager to see the flick again on DVD. Great soundtrack too. I've never read anything by McCabe, but between this and Spider and The Butcher's Boy he's building quite a nice filmography.

I found it really grating and didn't see much going on besides the obvious Candide naif stuff (apart from the great soundtrack), which shouldn't have taken 2 and a half hours to get to. Perhaps it did something interesting w/r/t N.Irish/English conflict that was beyond me, but the identity issues seemed to be set-up and knocked down without much exploration.

Haha okay my bad.

Yeah, I was really confused for a minute! (and getting excited about giving Breakfast on Pluto another chance).

Look novels by people named Patrick with last names starting with Mc have been turned into good movies lately! It still works! Really!

I thought Butcher Boy was pretty great, so was eager to see this on the basis of that, but missed it at the theaters. I'll probably catch it on DVD though.

Don't forget Patrick O'Brian (Master and Commander)!

Love The Butcher Boy, novel and film. Drag and attendant queer 'flamboyance' often grate on me, but this didn't.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 17:22 (twenty years ago)

I loved The Butcher Boy too. He's had a nice run lately; I really enjoyed The Good Thief too.

I wonder: what's Neil Jordan's obsession with homosexual subversion, whether as text or subtext (Mona Lisa, The Crying Game, Interview with the Vampire)? A few of his short stories touch on it too. By all accounts he's a nice straight man who still lives in Dublin. An artist doesn't exactly choose his obsessions, but it's so incongruous in his case.

I saw this tonight and have returned home feeling lonely and gay. I liked it.

Oh, serious serious serious!

I saw this tonight. The robins look rubbish, didn't they? Still, there were lots of things I liked.

Patrick is a terribly attractive woman.

two months pass...
Charmless and coy, in the most hideous fashion. Cillian Murphy's voice drove me batshit by the 70-minute mark. Jordan's pleading for sympathy was skin-crawling.

Stephen Rea had amusing bits. Gavin Friday was really sexy in his Gary Glitter mullet. Bryan Ferry was menacing enough to force me to consider whether he should contemplate a movie career.

Quite rubbish. VERY annoying.

I got this on Netflix, and watched the first half the other night. So far it's been pretty great.

It's all about Bryan Ferry.
