back weh

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 22:16 (twenty years ago)

That isn't actually a voice "effect." The sound's produced by wrapping the throat, chin, and mouth in a single, taut layer of Saran Wrap, then singing in a nasalized "head" voice.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 22:21 (twenty years ago)

Alternately, by swallowing an emu.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 22:22 (twenty years ago)

No thats M*rissa innit? *runs*

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 19 January 2006 00:19 (twenty years ago)

I want to see O'Conner disjoint her jaw for some ratite-chomping voice mods, her big brown eye bulging above its feathery tummy. Quality entertainment.

Abbott (Abbott), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:16 (twenty years ago)

O'Connor, sorry.

Abbott (Abbott), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:16 (twenty years ago)

Wow, Saran Wrap? I thought it was electronically done too. You'd think that would get a bit uncomfortable after a few takes or possibly sound kazoo-like.

naus (Robert T), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:36 (twenty years ago)

I think CHer may have saran wrapped her entire body.

Latham Green (mike), Thursday, 19 January 2006 06:06 (twenty years ago)

then singing in a nasalized "head" voice.

Is this the voice women make when they receive head? That would explain so much.

Do you BelieEEHEEve in life after love...

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 January 2006 06:14 (twenty years ago)

Cher always sounds slightly like her throat is collapsing anyways

Latham Green (mike), Thursday, 19 January 2006 06:18 (twenty years ago)

Given that Sinead used to sing this way on her own ("MandiiIIIIIiiinkaaaAAAAAAAA"), she's fully in her rights to use technology to do it for her now.

And whatshername from the Cranberries will still be there.. listening... appropriating...

Dom iNut (donut), Thursday, 19 January 2006 08:04 (twenty years ago)

"You've got me wrapped around yoru fingahhh...do you have to let it lingaaah"

I bet Sinead could kick her ass. She seems like she must be a ninja by now

Latham Green (mike), Thursday, 19 January 2006 09:44 (twenty years ago)

".. do you have to be a ninja.."

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 19 January 2006 09:52 (twenty years ago)

Dolores is not Larry Mullen, Dolores is Bono. *chortle*

john clarkson, Thursday, 19 January 2006 09:53 (twenty years ago)

Lee "scratch" Perry VS. Eno! with Nun chucks !

Latham Green (mike), Thursday, 19 January 2006 09:55 (twenty years ago)

The effect would be either vocoder or talkbox

DJ Karen, Monday, 23 January 2006 07:31 (twenty years ago)

I read an interview with the producer of that Cher track recently. It was a Digitech Talker.

Ed (dali), Monday, 23 January 2006 07:41 (twenty years ago)

You read an interview with a Digitech Talker?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Monday, 23 January 2006 07:45 (twenty years ago)

Interviewer: "So, can I ask you about Cher's Do You Believe...?"

Digitech Talker: "Why-aayy-eee certain-lee-eee-ee!"

Interviewer: "The effect on the song, how did you do it?"

Digitech Talker: "I wo-ooh-ooh-ouldn't ca-aaaw-aaw-aawlll it an effect, it comes natur-aaaw-aawwll-eeeh-eeeh-y."

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 23 January 2006 10:19 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...

why is every male R&B vocal I hear these days run through some hardcore pitch quantize processing shit

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 29 June 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)

I had no idea that Cher used a talker on that song.

Those things are awesome.

John Justen, Friday, 29 June 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

Nothing beats hearing Kate Beckinsale sing "Amazing Grace" via Autotune in The Last Days of Disco.

nabisco, Friday, 29 June 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

Wow John, how the hell did you manage to avoid "Believe"????

HI DERE, Friday, 29 June 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

No, no, I know the song, I just didn't know that it was that particular pedal (which I've always really liked, and was a massive commercial failure.)

John Justen, Friday, 29 June 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)

Curtis, are you sure it's not just T-Pain?

jaymc, Friday, 29 June 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

And I thought that "Believe" was the first prominent example of AutoTune.

jaymc, Friday, 29 June 2007 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

they all do seem to suspiciously sound like T-Pain, perhaps they're just playing every single song featuring T-Pain ever, or Akon

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 29 June 2007 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

Is this the voice women make when they receive head?

Hey, you're the finnish sex-expert!

stevienixed, Friday, 29 June 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

For the record, the producers of Believe lied about the Digitech Talker:

Tantrum The Cat, Friday, 29 June 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

curtis many r&b vocalists (esp. in the post-swing era) have used heavy processing for years and years!

strongohulkington, Friday, 29 June 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

ok wtf at the "head voice" nonsense.

HI DERE, Friday, 29 June 2007 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

Every singer I've ever been in a band with has talked about "head voice" v. "chest voice." Far from nonsense.

Phil D., Saturday, 30 June 2007 00:42 (eighteen years ago)

cunnilingus voice vs. c on t's voice

max, Saturday, 30 June 2007 00:50 (eighteen years ago)

ok wtf at the massive point-missing nonsense.

HI DERE, Saturday, 30 June 2007 02:36 (eighteen years ago)
