My mother used to be his secretary. And she said he was a real mensch.

Always mentioned trivia: despite being the quintessential English letch, James was actually South African.

Bless This House is on everyday at noon on the paramount comedy channel here (UK).

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Thursday, 19 January 2006 00:38 (twenty years ago)

despite his mashed-up old coupon and wideboy persona, james was, at one time, a successful ladies' hairdresser

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 19 January 2006 00:39 (twenty years ago)

Paul Kelly (kelly), Thursday, 19 January 2006 10:02 (twenty years ago)

k. williams is meanly rude abt SJ in his diaries

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 19 January 2006 10:07 (twenty years ago)

Great laugh, great leer, brilliant face, excellent timing. I've never understood why people were surprised by the 'relevation' that he was South African as he never fully dropped the accent.

May the benevolence of the god Shivo bring blessings on your house.
And on yours.
And may his wisdom bring success in all your undertakings.
And in yours.
And may his radiance light up your life.
And up yours.

Very classic - he's not terrific merely in the Carry Ons. About a hundred other films, and he outshines Hancock in his own show, I think. Checking IMDB, he played Hildy Johnson in a 1948 TV version of The Front Page.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 19 January 2006 10:59 (twenty years ago)

saying he "outshines" hancock is more or less than pointless, I think, but he was great w/ him, yes

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 19 January 2006 11:15 (twenty years ago)

On Gunnersbury Avenue in Ealing there is a blue plaque for him. I know this because my friend O's family live in his old house and hosted the plaque ceremony where every British comic alive came down for the unveiling. There was also a large '60s cocktail bar left in situ for them when they moved in.
