I am going to need a new computer desk / stand thing.

Previously my PC was on a dressing table which had been magically converted, a la Laurence Llewelyn Bowen, into a desk using a towel, and old door, and two stolen bricks (sorry JD Wetherspoon).

You can kind of get an idea of what it was like by clicking here].

The dressing table is not a desk, so it is a; too low, and b; not suited to having a chair positioned properly so one can type. Hence the bricks (to raise the monitor) and the door + towel (to allow me to adjust the desk top position).

Emma has a very nice glass and metal desk from John Lewis, which you can see below (it's the pic from the JL site, not her actual desk). My new computer is an iMac. It'd look just like that if I got one!

Problems.

a; glass top = need a mouse mat. I hate mouse mats.
b; doesn't really fit the style of my room.
c; possibly a bit large too.

I need a computer desk. Or a stand to go on the dressing table. Also can anyone tell me how to rewire a wallsocket so I can remove the heater in my room and make stuff flush with the wall to gain an extra bit of space?

I appreciate that this thread is mad, but you lot are good at this kind of thing. www.ikea.co.uk comes up wanting.

I found a really nice one at John Lewis that was triangular, and built to fit into a corner, which would have been really good for me, seeing as how I want to put my computer desk into a nook. It was wooden, but nicely made, had a really good grain. It cost about £150, though, so I don't think it's quite Ikealand.

That reminds me, I need to go and get one myself, now I have all these vouchers.

Kate, was it the MODUES CORNER DESK at £175?

That's the one.

::drools::

Except I guess the one i saw was on deep January sale. Still, I've got about £200 in JL vouchers. Actually wait - that includes the monitor stand thing, which was separate when I saw it.

argos.co.uk then furniture - office furniture. they have a surprising amount of desks and workstations.

After clearing out space by moving furniture around and stuff, I have ordered the glass+metal one pictured at the top from JL.

Actually, I have discovered, after looking at them at the weekend, the one that I like is the Cobra. Didn't order it though, because my mum rang, curtailing the shopping trip.

I also got my computer desk from Argos. It's not bad, but like almost all computer desks the monitor height is too low.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 23 January 2006 12:34 (twenty years ago)

x-post

750mm! I like it; I think the desk I have just now is a little too high; plus I like the look of the habitat one too

who is jean nouvel?

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 23 January 2006 12:39 (twenty years ago)

Any desk with a single top surface is going to put your monitor too low. Ideally - going by rough measurements I've just taken of my own desk - the area your monitor stands on should be about 20cm above the area your keyboard stands on.

I like the Parisian windows (though I would be a bit scared of using a computer inside, in case it go all Cube or Matrix scary) but the Swiss thing bothers me, somehow.

Trying To Resonate Concrete (kate), Monday, 23 January 2006 13:04 (twenty years ago)

The Swiss thing looks like it should be a scene from a sci-fi horror movie.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Monday, 23 January 2006 13:06 (twenty years ago)

What is the Swiss thing? Barcelona's gherkin is very cool, but in a (currently) shitty part of the city. We stayed up the road from it - big redevelopment area. Ace trams, mind.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 23 January 2006 13:07 (twenty years ago)

www.wikipedia.com

saying that though, what is the paris thing?

: )

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 23 January 2006 13:08 (twenty years ago)

yes, sorry - it is the Swiss thing that reminds me of Cube. (natch)

The Parisian things looks like it should have Time Lords meditating in it or something.

the paris bdn is the arab institute (institut du monde arabe)

Was at an exhibition of his works in Lousiana Moderne kunst museet in Denmark last year. The walls were covered with some of his quotes, lovely buildings but the man is a terrible gobshite.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 23 January 2006 15:22 (twenty years ago)

don't like him very much

RJG (RJG), Monday, 23 January 2006 15:35 (twenty years ago)

I now have a new iMac to put on my desk!

If I had a desk. Yet.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 11:01 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

Wasn't worth starting a thread, so I'm nicking Nick's.

Finally, a laptop desk for road warriors:
