The London Bus Game

This should really be on the I Love Transport board, but since it doesn't yet exist.. here goes..

Inspired by a couple of school kids on the 88 this morning, one of whom were naming a place and London and the other names a bus route that goes to that destination from Camden Town. Here are the rules.

Starting from trafalgar square, state a next destination. Then the next poster has to come up with a sensible* bus route. And then he/she will name the next stop and the poster after that will name the route that goes from the previous destination to the next.

Where there are choice of buses, you don't have to name them all but you can if you like (or even give a preference if you're feeling smart)

It might get boring after a while/straight away but what the hey

Oh wait that's tubes.

They're better anyway.

Mornington Crescent!

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:17 (twenty years ago)

See, Ken, Onimo out played you by resorting to a cross diagonal play and using the Brownian post war selective rules.

Bit of a school boy error, I'm afraid.

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:21 (twenty years ago)

off the thread dudes. (you can configure journeyplanner to do only busses)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:22 (twenty years ago)

also, at a party last month a friend and i played mornington crescent with busses. truth.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:22 (twenty years ago)

route 88

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:23 (twenty years ago)

This is rub. I only know Sarf London busroutes. :-(

filled the fjords of my brain (kate), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:24 (twenty years ago)

fuck this is really handy. Is there a direct bus from Nunhead to the centre? How long does it take? And can you get a bus-only travelcard?

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:24 (twenty years ago)

kate since this thread is about "london bus" are you agreeing with the general universal world view that south london isn't actually london?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:25 (twenty years ago)

Bus only travelcard used to be £3 at newsagents, but it's probably gone up...

x-post GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR We are on the RIGHT side. We have more and better busses. Stick to your silly tubes.

filled the fjords of my brain (kate), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:26 (twenty years ago)

well don't complain about this thread then!!!!!!!!!!

ken c (ken c), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:27 (twenty years ago)

You only have more buses because taxis refuse to go there.
xpost

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:28 (twenty years ago)

I mean, if you have more buses, then surely, if you know only south london bus routes, it's better than knowing only north london bus routes, and thus this thread would be grebt! yet you said it's rub. so you're contradicting with yourself.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:28 (twenty years ago)

I'm not complaning about the thread! I like the thread! There just need to be more Sarf London bus routes on it.

Stockwell Underground to Streatham Dip - GO!

filled the fjords of my brain (kate), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:29 (twenty years ago)

South London is nearer central London than North London, er, is. near to central London.

Is there a monthly bus travel pass? Or was that the three pounds answer?!? Yippee!!!

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:29 (twenty years ago)

you can get bus only travelcards. they'll be more than they were but less if you get them on an oystercard so they can FOLLOW US ALL AROUND AND KEEP TABS ON US AND USE THE INFORMATION AGAINST US AT A LATER DATE.

has someone set up an oystercard swap site where you swap your card with a stranger every week to foil their evil plans yet? it must be in the works, surely.

emsk ( emsk), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:29 (twenty years ago)

where's the next destination steve?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:30 (twenty years ago)

How long does it take to get an Oyster card? (x-post sorry)

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:30 (twenty years ago)

i wouldn't trust anyone else's oystercards.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:31 (twenty years ago)

it takes next to no time. if it's pre-pay only or 7day travelcard you can get one straight away. anything longer you just have to fill in a form and register it (which can be done over the counter too)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:32 (twenty years ago)

You used to be able to get Zone 2 only travelcards but someone told me they're gone the way of Wilson Pickett.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:33 (twenty years ago)

Weekly bus pass used to be £11 last year, now idea what it is now.

filled the fjords of my brain (kate), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:33 (twenty years ago)

and yep you can get a bus-only month-long travelcard. i think weekly it's £12 or something, so for a month it should be £40 or so? i dunno, i got a bike so i only use pre-pay on my oyster.

emsk ( emsk), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:34 (twenty years ago)

How much cheaper is it with oyster? I mean generally.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:35 (twenty years ago)

weekly ones must be more than £12... they put them up STUPID amounts every year (it went from 7 to 9.50 to 11 in two years so it's probably £200 now). I bought an anuual one on new year's day so I don't care yayyyyy.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:36 (twenty years ago)

isn't it only cheaper for oyster pre-pay and one day travels? they charge you the previous year's prices with oyster i think.

on a bus now if you pay with cash it's fucking £1.50 per ride. ONE FIFTY. it's daylight robbery. whereas oyster is 80p a go.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:38 (twenty years ago)

i think.. maybe it's gone up to £1.20 (i dunno)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:39 (twenty years ago)

it's cheaper enough to make it worth having one, the cunts. a tube journey anywhere in zone 1-4 with no oyster is now £3 which is EXTORTIONATE - not so bad if you're going from northwick park to gants hill, but a pisser if you're going from finsbury park to euston. with an oyster, it's £1. a single bus journey with no oyster is £1.50, with oyster it's 80p.

emsk ( emsk), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:39 (twenty years ago)

This is SO FREAKING ANNOYING if you live on a trainline that DOESN'T TAKE SODDING OYSTERS!!!

OK, I think (hope?) that Thameslink still does quite cheap return fares, but still.

Anyway, back to the busses! Quite disappointed that no one got the handy 255 mad bus back there.

filled the fjords of my brain (kate), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:43 (twenty years ago)

Much cheaper then! That makes a big difference to my ongoingly revised financial planning. Ta.

btw, anyone know about the Nunhead into the centre thing? I've found a great house there, but I'm worried about the time and distance issue. I'd never heard of the fucking place before Wednesday.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:45 (twenty years ago)

i swearta god oyster stakes £1 for my bus ride in the am, £0.80 in the evening. wtf.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:48 (twenty years ago)

Nunhead, you'd take the 343 to London Bridge.

Or if you walked up to New Cross Gate you could get a bus almost anywhere - 171 or 172 to Holborn or St. Pauls - or the whole raft of Old Kent Road busses that roar up towards town.

filled the fjords of my brain (kate), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:52 (twenty years ago)

know how long it takes?

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:54 (twenty years ago)

Depends on the time of day - Old Kent Road can be murder at rush hour.

filled the fjords of my brain (kate), Friday, 20 January 2006 13:54 (twenty years ago)

fares and stuff here:
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/fares-tickets/2006/index.shtml

day bus pass = 3.50, weekly = 13.50

single bus tickets are £1 between 7 and 9:30am, 80p otherwise, theorry.

the other thing, Gatinha, is that there's a £3 deposit for the card itself, refundable when you surrender it.

koogs (koogs), Friday, 20 January 2006 14:02 (twenty years ago)

heheh "surrender" it.

theorry the fares are more at peak commute times... the cunts...

gatinha if you go to tfl.gov.uk and click on "advanced options" on the journey planner, it lets you put in anywhere to anywhere - station, postcode, address etc - and you can specify you only want to go by bus by unclicking all the other forms of transport. i think it adjusts journey time for time of day etc as well, as it usually seems to be pretty accurate.

emsk ( emsk), Friday, 20 January 2006 14:05 (twenty years ago)

This is good shit! Thanks again.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Friday, 20 January 2006 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Fuck, an hour! Fuck Nunhead. Room didn't have a bed ennyway.

Gatinha (rwillmsen), Friday, 20 January 2006 14:08 (twenty years ago)

i demand that you all cease this activity at once!

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 20 January 2006 14:10 (twenty years ago)

Gatinha, depends where you are in Nunhead - if you're on the Rye side, you could easily walk and catch the 12 (30-35min to Regent St) or a little further to Lordship Lane for the 176 (about the same to the West End).

Xpost! Oh, never mind. (Nearly bought a house in Nunhead recently; still might depending on never-ending Crystal Palace saga)
