New NYC where to lunch thread! Houston/Varick/6th Ave

When I started my last freelance job around Times Square, you all gave me some great suggestions....now I'm working it on Varick st. near Houston. I've gotten good cheap thai on Carmine, I've walked to Bleeker/Mcdougal and gone to Burger Joint, Indian Bread Co., Kaiti Rolls, Hummous and Mammouns. I've gone to some of the local lunch for the worker places, mostly Sohomade for soups/salads.

What are your favorites? Fast and Cheap? Less fast and cheap? Just plain good? West Village/Soho area...

Are any of the other middle-eastern places on mcdougal good? Mammouns is too small/crowded. Where is good mexican?

etc, etc.

Shopsin's is near there, yes?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 20 January 2006 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Sullivan St Bakery?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 20 January 2006 19:12 (twenty years ago)

If you have time, wander to Mustache, which is on Bedford, between Barrow & Grove for cheap and delicious Middle Eastern "pitzas". Or Sacred Chow on Sullivan, between Bleecker and 3rd Ave (vegan).
And yeah, Sullivan St. bakery is great, or the Voghurt place next door, where they also have delicious filo spinach pies.

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 20 January 2006 19:15 (twenty years ago)

Balthazar Bakery. Snack. is 'ino still open?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 20 January 2006 19:15 (twenty years ago)

Shopsin's is near there, yes?

right around the corner. I went there once ages ago and it was really slow so I generally rule it out to keep my lunches short. Factoid, a woman who works there used to work at Other Music, I think her father is the owner?

Mustache

I went once, it was good but was really expensive. I ordered a chicken dish that was like, chicken in foul, the kind of foul that's pureed, and ordered a side of hummos, and had to PAY for pita. That seemed odd.

Thanks and keep it coming!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 20 January 2006 19:18 (twenty years ago)

Ha, Dan, you want good Mexican? This is by no means cheap everyday-lunch fare, but on Sullivan, just north of Bleeker, there's Florencia 13, a Mexican place with an actual southwestern/so-cal agenda. I'm in love with it. Their Original East Los burrito may be $13, but it's the only burrito I've had east of the Mississippi that falls in line with the stuff I grew up eating in the southwest. Should be delicious enough to please even without the nostalgia.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 20 January 2006 19:19 (twenty years ago)

Kirara at like 33 Carmine, next to grey dog cafe is really good sushi, and they have a pretty nice lunch special. It's one of the few sushi places in new york that I like and that I can afford.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 20 January 2006 19:25 (twenty years ago)

Pintxos: across the street from Don Hill's on Greenwich. Great Basque place with lunch specials.

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 20 January 2006 19:26 (twenty years ago)

dan let's do lunch sometime.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 20 January 2006 19:30 (twenty years ago)

Karahi: on Broome near West Broadway. Mysteriously-run Indian buffet with tall ceilings. Good lamb and fritters. Oddly saturnine.

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 20 January 2006 19:33 (twenty years ago)

Lupe's: on 6th north of Canal. "East LA" style Mexican place with great enchiladas.

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 20 January 2006 19:37 (twenty years ago)

Heard good things but I have not yet tried cheesesteaks here:

BB Sandwich Bar
120 W. 3rd St. (btwn MacDougal and Sixth Ave.)

Confounded (Confounded), Friday, 20 January 2006 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Oh and Buddha House on the corner of Carmine and Varick is the good, cheap Chinese place.

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 20 January 2006 19:41 (twenty years ago)

I think the Sacred Chow on Hudson is closed/moved to Sullivan St.? Mama Buddah on Hudson (right before Bleecker) has the best hot & sour soup on the planet. I also like the ratty Chinese takeout on Varick with the loud woman screaming behind the counter -- their shrimp in garlic sauce lunch special is yummy. And you know about the little Thai place on Carmine already.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Friday, 20 January 2006 19:44 (twenty years ago)

I like the fastish 'natural' food at Quantum Leap on Thompson (and so does Seinfeld's beloved Kramer, apparently).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 20 January 2006 20:15 (twenty years ago)

you're lucky. i work on 26th & 11th avenue. there's absolutely nothing here except bottino, and there's only so many proscuitto sandwiches one can eat in a week.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 20 January 2006 20:18 (twenty years ago)

I worked up there and you're right.

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Friday, 20 January 2006 20:24 (twenty years ago)

although there's always free wine on thursday gallery night. and hot artfags. which i think is better than food.

phil-two (phil-two), Friday, 20 January 2006 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Reason 137 that artfags are better than food: when artfags go straight to the hips, it's a good thing.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 20 January 2006 20:29 (twenty years ago)

stence, where is Homestead Records?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 20 January 2006 20:43 (twenty years ago)

Rockville Center BRO.

circa 94

ddb (ddb), Friday, 20 January 2006 21:00 (twenty years ago)

haha they had an office in the 20's, for a while. tagged along while grubbs and o'rourke picked up the squirrel bait master tapes. roffle.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 20 January 2006 21:06 (twenty years ago)

anyway, where are you now?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 20 January 2006 21:21 (twenty years ago)

b'way and houston.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 20 January 2006 21:31 (twenty years ago)

Cubana Cafe or Cafe Cubana (i forget) on Thompson bet. Prince and Spring. Cheap for the area and awesome sandwiches and cerviche.

ShawShank Rambo Connection (Carey), Saturday, 21 January 2006 02:46 (twenty years ago)

Temple in the Village is good for lunch. It's a really cheap vegan buffet...on west 3rd near Thompson St. I go there once a week...you'll feel virtuous afterwards.

paulhw (paulhw), Saturday, 21 January 2006 22:04 (twenty years ago)

i've been there. not bad.

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 21 January 2006 22:13 (twenty years ago)

but for 3rd st i like harry's burritos better.

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 21 January 2006 22:14 (twenty years ago)

Lupe's seconded, cheap Mexican better than the basic menu makes it look. I get the chicken mole enchiladas or the carnitas tacos.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Saturday, 21 January 2006 22:23 (twenty years ago)

i grabbed a quick slice at demarco's pizzeria on houston/macdougal today. $2.75 for a plain slice is a bit absurd but it was totally worth it.

abbondanza on bleecker/macdougal also very good.

joseph (joseph), Saturday, 21 January 2006 22:56 (twenty years ago)

oh man, joseph, have you been to the actual Difara's though?

coworkers have gotten some great-looking sandwhiches from abbondanzas I think.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 21 January 2006 23:01 (twenty years ago)

bump!

still hungry!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 23 January 2006 17:56 (twenty years ago)

i'm starving. but sick. blah.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 23 January 2006 18:02 (twenty years ago)

i haven't, dan! and i'm even in that vicinity quite a bit (well, ditmas park, which is about four stops away on the Q). my friends went once and said it took them an hour to get a pie (one guy does it all, right? i worked at a pizzeria once and i can't even FATHOM that), but they also said it was absolutely worth every penny.

(quick aside also to dan: the crazy rhythms mix cd hasn't left my cd player since saturday.)

joseph (joseph), Monday, 23 January 2006 22:31 (twenty years ago)

my friends went once and said it took them an hour to get a pie (one guy does it all, right? i worked at a pizzeria once and i can't even FATHOM that), but they also said it was absolutely worth every penny.

when were they there? difara's can get very very very very busy, esp. with the amount of delivery business they get -- i wouldn't recommend going on a saturday night.

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 23 January 2006 22:38 (twenty years ago)

even when empty, you have to wait for Difaras. He just takes his time is all! But it's worth it and you have no reason not to go if you're in the area...most people make excuses about it being far, even though it's like 15 minutes on the Q or a 10 minute drive from downtown brooklyn.

(glad you like the CD. I'm trying to find the time to make a few more mixes by myself to share online, you'll probably dig.)

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 23 January 2006 23:00 (twenty years ago)

ate a burger at the White Horse today. the waitress asked the cook if he liked redheads or MIA.

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Monday, 23 January 2006 23:17 (twenty years ago)

aw, i haven't been to the white horse in so long! i once had a sort-of first date there!

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 23 January 2006 23:27 (twenty years ago)

Dan - I'm starting a sort-of-permanentnew gig on Greenwich St. nearby tomorrow. Lunch sometime would be cool.

PS I got the Crazy Rhythms CD myself in the mail today. Really great! All ILMers should own this ($4, people!).

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 00:00 (twenty years ago)

yes to lunch...and you still owe me a dvd filled with videos.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 00:07 (twenty years ago)

I do! I just need access to a burner and the DVD is yours.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 00:09 (twenty years ago)

most people make excuses about it being far

heh, 2006 is the year i stop saying this about any place in new york. (so far)

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 00:20 (twenty years ago)

(girlfriend with a car helps me make NYC a small place)

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 01:38 (twenty years ago)

Pintxos: across the street from Don Hill's on Greenwich.
If you go a few blocks south to Sosa Borella, you just might see Ge0rge M4rtin's son Greg there.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Thursday, 26 January 2006 17:00 (twenty years ago)

Dan! MELAMPO!! 105 Sullivan Street (actually now it's called "Alidoro")

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 26 January 2006 17:42 (twenty years ago)

i.e. unbelievably delicious Italian sandwiches

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 26 January 2006 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Yup. And you just might see one of teh B3astie B0ys in there.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Thursday, 26 January 2006 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Although at times Walter does get a little heavy-handed with teh balsamic vinegar.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Thursday, 26 January 2006 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Also, you could walk through the park from there over to 105 Thompson to Snack, for same good fancy downtown Greek food. I recommend teh tuna sandwich.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Thursday, 26 January 2006 17:58 (twenty years ago)

Oh Oh, that Jamaican place with the patties and the curry goat and jerk chicken! I forgot what street its on - Thompson between bleecker and something? Oh I miss that place
