Mouse Thrown Into Fire Sets Home Ablaze

FORT SUMNER, N.M. —

A mouse got its revenge against a homeowner who tried to dispose of it in a pile of burning leaves. The blazing creature ran back to the man's house and set it on fire.

Luciano Mares, 81, of Fort Sumner said he caught the mouse inside his house and wanted to get rid of it.

"I had some leaves burning outside, so I threw it in the fire, and the mouse was on fire and ran back at the house," Mares said from a motel room Saturday.

Village Fire Chief Juan Chavez said the burning mouse ran to just beneath a window, and the flames spread up from there and throughout the house.

No was hurt inside, but the home and everything in it was destroyed.

Unseasonably dry and windy conditions have charred more than 53,000 acres and destroyed 10 homes in southeastern New Mexico in recent weeks.

"I've seen numerous house fires," village Fire Department Capt. Jim Lyssy said, "but nothing as unique as this one."

Last week the fire dept said they believe the mouse story a ruse and that the owner had accidently set fire to his house himself.

There was a story in Private Eye a few years back about a guy who was sitting in the bath when a moth fluttered past, so he used a combination of aerosol and lighter to take the moth out. Flaming moth flew straight onto the polystyrene ceiling tiles and started a blaze that destroyed the flat. Fire Brigade spokesman was unimpressed.

Slaying leads to trick-or-treating ban

ALBUQUERQUE, Oct. 27 (UPI) -- Officials at a pueblo in New Mexico banned Halloween trick-or-treating, saying they were concerned cult activity was behind a gruesome killing last month.

Jemez Pueblo Gov. Joshua Madalena said Tuesday the ban was instituted "because of the violence that happened," The Santa Fe New Mexican reported.

In September, officials charged Lucas Michael Ray Steven Toledo, 22, of Jemez Pueblo, with stabbing 21-year-old Matthew Panana of Jemez Pueblo to death, then trying to disembowel him.

"That really made me and my tribal council and my religious leaders step back and take a look at where are we now," Madalena said. "The religious leaders had told me that this (Halloween) is not a part of our culture. Many of them are older men and stated that, 'When I was young, we didn't have this. When did it start? And look at now, you know. We've lost control.'"
