There's got to be a mourning after.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 14 January 2006 20:45 (twenty years ago)

She deserves better than that, though. I actually have always liked Shelley Winters. She was what I remembered from the Poseidon Adventure (from seeing it as a kid) and I was very happy when she took a turn as Roseanne's grandma. She was awesome. RIP.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 14 January 2006 20:46 (twenty years ago)

she was truly amazing. i'll miss her.

Her performances are mostly unbearable, but her shrillness was put to expert use in A Place in the Sun, Lolita, and Next Time, Greenwich Village

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Saturday, 14 January 2006 21:20 (twenty years ago)

i find her performances quite bearable and am grateful for that list, Scott.

Zwan (miccio), Saturday, 14 January 2006 21:38 (twenty years ago)

aw man, this is like the worst day ever :-(

yvette yreka (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 14 January 2006 22:13 (twenty years ago)

She has joined Ms. Peggy Lee in bombshell heaven.

Aimless (Aimless), Saturday, 14 January 2006 22:21 (twenty years ago)

she was great in classic and dud alike, an approachable icon and a real pro: from Lolita and A Place In The Sun to The Posideon Adventure and Who Slew Auntie Roo and on and on.

RIP

She was a proper star. Great character actresses deserve to be cherished.

Sinister Oink Kingpin (noodle vague), Saturday, 14 January 2006 22:39 (twenty years ago)

It's going to make that upcoming Poseidon remake seem even more ridiculous.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 14 January 2006 23:19 (twenty years ago)

She was like Christopher Walken: if you wanted a "Shelley Winters type," you couldn't get anyone else; you had to swallow hard and hire her.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Saturday, 14 January 2006 23:20 (twenty years ago)

She was so great in Lolita

it's not like the original poseidon was some great model of dignity!!

but regardless, rip. she was pretty awesome.

slocki chez antexit (antexit), Sunday, 15 January 2006 02:33 (twenty years ago)

How about her underwater in that Model T (or whatever) with the seaweed drifting along with her hair in Night of the Hunter? (shiver)

Joe (Joe), Sunday, 15 January 2006 02:56 (twenty years ago)

Her Poseidon swmim scene was pretty incredible as well.

It's funny how close her roles in "Night of the Hunter" and "Lolita" are. In both she's a widow wih children who meets a man who seems to want her for what she is, but turns out to have ulterior motives.

"It's going to make that upcoming Poseidon remake seem even more ridiculous."

they just had a made for t.v. poseidon remake on not that long ago and it wasn't very good. i don't think there needs to be a third.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 15 January 2006 04:14 (twenty years ago)

I forgot how fabulous she was in Night of the Hunter.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Sunday, 15 January 2006 06:55 (twenty years ago)

I'll never forget her and the comedian Robert Klein having an unmistakable hatefest on The Tonight Show circa 1981. Shelley kept interrupting Klein's chat with Carson about the portly Dodgers pitcher Fernando Valenzuela, and SW finally chirped something like "He's fat, isn't he?" and Klein delivered some kind of "You should know" kayo. They stalked away from each other at the end of the show.

And yeah, she was perfect as Charlotte Haze.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 16 January 2006 14:53 (twenty years ago)

I saw a clip on TV yesterday of her on Tonight Show with Annie Potts, and AP was all, "We've met before. We made a movie together..."
SW: "And what was it called?"
AP: "(name of movie)"
SW: "And you were WONDERFUL!"

I rolled around for a while.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 16 January 2006 14:58 (twenty years ago)

Funny that first movie that came to my mind was "A place in the sun"

Apparently neither of those was her peak on Carson! from iMdB:

On the 6 July, 1972 episode of "Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson", she grew tired of Oliver Reed's attitude towards women. They had a heated conversation and after Shelley told Reed what she thought of his opinions, left the set. The show continued with Oliver Reed still going on about women while Johnny Carson looked at him in a daze. Shortly afterwards, Winters appeared from Stage left, unannounced to Reed and to the shock of Carson. She was carrying a champagne bucket of ice and water with which she surprised Reed by dumping it over his head. Reed was furious over this and tried to attack her but set personal intervened. The show broke for commercial break. When the show resumed both actors were gone.
