Just booked World Cup tickets - anyone FAWCM ?

Today was the deadline day for the latest batch of WC2006 tickets, and the demand (according to the Observer) was supposed to be 18 times as many applications as available tix. I would imagine that after this 'window' the only tix left will be for the likes of Tunisia v Saudi Arabia.

Anyway, my pal and I have gone for Japan-Croatia, Iran-Angola and Brazil-Japan, from 18-22 June. We don't seriously rate our chances of getting either, let alone both, Japan matches but the other one should be within our grasp, I hope. I know that Daniel (aka Japanese Giraffe) is planning on doing all Angola's games, and that Ken C is doing a few too. It's be cool to do some kind of FAWCM at some stage in Germany !

Anyone else going or plan to go ?

The ILX Scotland massive especially welcome of course.

darren (darren), Sunday, 15 January 2006 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Chortle! I would, of course, love to go to a World Cup, but I'll wait until we get to one ourselves (yes, yes, I know...) - I was too poor to get to France 98, but my brother had an excellent time without getting near a match. Mind you, Germany = easy to get to and lots of nummy beer.

*thinks this through*

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 15 January 2006 22:11 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, as Darren says, I'm going to latch onto the unsuspecting Angolans for their matches, partly because it's their first World Cup and also because I speak Portuguese.

I get the impression from friends who've been to previous World Cups that the whole event is a great party. And it's with that in mind that I've gone for Brazil v Australia as one of my games.

As Ailsa says, Germany is accessible and beery.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Sunday, 15 January 2006 22:13 (twenty years ago)

However, pubs down the road from me = accessible and beery. And they have less England fans in them! :)

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 15 January 2006 22:14 (twenty years ago)

Ah yes, but are there World Cup stadia in that pub?

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Sunday, 15 January 2006 22:15 (twenty years ago)

Oh and I don't intend to anywhere near England fans

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Sunday, 15 January 2006 22:21 (twenty years ago)

Intend to what, Daniel ?

darren (darren), Sunday, 15 January 2006 22:27 (twenty years ago)

I've applied for Togo v France, Ukraine v Tunisia, Czech Republic v Ghana plus later stage games (inc. the final) but obv. prepared to not receive any. Planning to go out there anyway if only for a weekend or two.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Sunday, 15 January 2006 22:29 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I reckon that even just one of our selected matches plus a few days enjoying the vibe in Leipzig or wherever can only be a good thing.

darren (darren), Sunday, 15 January 2006 22:33 (twenty years ago)

Iran vs Angola! In a very real sense (i.e. in a Pop World Cup game we are playing elsewhere) this is Sinkah vs me! Daniel, if you are an Angolan supporter, I don't suppose you are also an expert on their music, by any chance?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 15 January 2006 23:01 (twenty years ago)

Wot? No Skotland?

scotstvo (scotstvo), Sunday, 15 January 2006 23:14 (twenty years ago)

Applied for South Korea v Togo - we'd booked our flights and hotel before the draw and just hoped we'd get a big game. Should be good anyway, put our group down as Togo fans.

JohnFoxxsJuno (JohnFoxxsJuno), Monday, 16 January 2006 09:11 (twenty years ago)

Martin, what a great question. Could you enlighten us, perhaps?

I'm afraid my knowledge of Angolan music extends only to the fact that the word samba is derived from the Angolan music 'semba' (which sounds a bit like a New Zealander saying the word 'samba'). I've heard bits and pieces and it sounds very upbeat and similar to what used to be referred to as hi-life.

I suppose it might be as well to do some research before I venture to Germany.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:29 (twenty years ago)

John Foxx, I too have applied for Togo-Korea tickets. A pal of mine who lives in Korea says there should be a very large contingent from Korea going, so expect a decent atmosphere.

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Intend to what, Daniel ?
-- darren (saintetienne7...), January 15th, 2006.

hmmmm now you're asking.

Please add a silly answer at your leisure.

[the sensible answer was 'be']

Japanese Giraffe (Japanese Giraffe), Monday, 16 January 2006 16:34 (twenty years ago)

I was hoping for enlightenment from you, but I have DLed a few dozen tracks, so I am slowly learning a bit.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 16 January 2006 18:20 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
just found out I've got a ticket for Ukraine v Tunisia in Berlin!

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:07 (twenty years ago)

The only game I managed to get tickets for was Iran v Angola in leipzig. I'll be going out there sometime earlier. FAP in Munich for Brazil v Australia?

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:15 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, good call! I've got Ukraine - Saudi Arabia in Hamburg.

xpost - We must arrange a WCFAP. I vote someone like...Bremen or Dortmund of perhaps Cologne. Then again, we could got to Berlin and dance at Club Bastard.

Dave B (daveb), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:24 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking of heading to Cologne. Obv. Berlin FAP will be key, for me. Maybe I could travel to Hamburg by canoe beforehand.

Daniel have you actually got a ticket for Bras vs Oz?

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:27 (twenty years ago)

No, steve. We have simply come to the conclusion that Brazil v Australia sounds like a great, colourful party, with or without tickets, and that Munich will be lots of fun that weekend. If we get tickets then so much the better

As for the FAP, having only secured the one ticket (of the seven applied for), the general plan is not to make too many plans, and to blag some tickets when we get to Germany. If there's a definite rendezvous for a FAP, I'll do my level best to make sure I'm there.

Daniel Giraffe (Daniel Giraffe), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:32 (twenty years ago)

there were still some tickets available (with restricted views) for Bra v Aus last week...so tempting.

i am with you on the spontaneous blagging and rendezvousing.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 23 February 2006 10:35 (twenty years ago)

I think - if memory serves - I've already been turned down for tickets for that game. It's a peculiar system.
