RFI: Extracting from a DVD under OS X

I have a DVD-R of a local school concert, from which I'd like to extract a 9-10 minute clip for my own use (*not* for profit or work). I believe the DVD-R was inadvertently recorded with copy protection (CSS?), though I could be wrong. I'm using a Mac laptop with Tiger on it.

Looking at the VOB files, the clip looks to be the middle portion of a 1 GB VOB. So, I'd need a way to trim the beginning and end of the file. I suspect I'll need to convert and/or demux the file, but don't know how to do this without losing any quality. I have iMovie, but don't have (and can't get) Premiere, Final Cut, or any non-free software. I've downloaded a52decX and mpeg2decX, but am not sure whether these will be helpful, or how.

And: if all else fails, just extracting the audio would be OK. I can, in that case, use Audacity to trim the ends of the file -- that I know how to do.

Any help will be hugely appreciated!

Sorry, that should be "iDVD", not "iMovie".

I've done this by simply plugging the DVD audio out into my mac with a radio shack garden-variety dual RCA -> 1/4" cable and recording in GarageBand, then saving it as whatever audio file.

Assuming of course that you have access to another DVD player and a Mac with an audio input.

Actually, I do have a second Mac with a decent audio card, and could do analog out to AIFF, if it comes down to it. It turns out that the audio track is AC3, which is really annoying -- why not just use PCM, people? Grrr...

MacTheRipper will get you the audio and video stripped of CSS, which iMovie should then be able to chop up for you.

Ha, I just now (c. 5-10 minutes ago) downloaded MacTheRipper, actually! I tried extracting just the audio, but it crashed. I'll give it another shot. And I do have iMovie, which I've never used and know nothing about, but it sounds like I'm on the right track, then (assuming MacTheRipper can rip this disk without crashing). Thanks!

How about Handbrake?

Handbrake and Mac The Ripper are both good.
