OK so my brother tipped me off on this guy, and it turns out that this film won the best animated film of all time award in the 80s. theres a dvd available, and i just got it.

maybe its corny to say, given that its obvious that hes a star in animation circles, but norsteins films really are stunningly beautiful, the little ive seen. it appears that in the russian style of having very little technology available, or resources generally, with pain staking application of time he was able to make quite amazing animation just with paper and some film techniques. well i dont know anything about it. but for instance in "the battle of kerzhenets" where all the characters are taken from russian frescos and icons, however he does it, it looks stunning.

tale of tales is pretty special, and seems to directly reference "mirror", but much shorter. the theme "utomlyennaya solntsem" breaks me up totally.

any more info on yuri norstein? is anything else available apart from the 6 short films ive got?
