Bleak House (for television)

Is anyone else watching this? It's pretty great, so far. I could do without some of the modern touches, but it's less obtrusive on that score than other recent offerings, and way better acted.

I suppose this means I should actually read the book now.

I could also do without the Law & Order bumpers between scenes.

Gillian Anderson is fantastic.

gabb, you beat me to that one, cept I don't watch any L&O so I couldn't identify that as such.

The comedic grotesques are quite well cast, as is Charles Dance. And what's this shit about Agent Scully being "unrecognizable" as Lady D?

Can't wait to see how they do the famous, uh, flameup.

OMG it's brilliant - I wish they were repeating it here!

four weeks pass...
so the teevee at least allows the suggestion that Guppy withdraws his offer due to Esther's "current state." but there may be alternative explanations. does someone want to enlighten me, or should i just await more teevee (or read the book) to find out?

also, has there been anything this good, Masterpiece Theatre (or other similar)-wise, in the last 10 years? 15?

I have no answers, as I read the book in college.

Also, too bad the spontaneous combustion scene was dark and ambiguous.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 22:28 (twenty years ago)

This seems a little too trendy for my taste.

this was good

no bones, Thursday, 23 February 2006 00:09 (twenty years ago)

yeah, in our amnesiac culture, Dickens = trendy. What shit.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 23 February 2006 14:18 (twenty years ago)

I think that might have been a reference to this, Morbius.

Redd Harvest (Ken L), Thursday, 23 February 2006 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Ah. So hard to keep up.

I thought it might've been in reference to Roger Ebert comparing Crash favorably to Dickens.

Every time this movie's going to be on, John asks if "it's the one with Gillian's tits in it."

ok so I seriously thought the thread title was "Black House" and it was some horrible racist reality show on FOX.

anyone watch the Beeb Persuasion last night? While I read the book ages ago, I'm pretty sure, I wouldn't know from the adaptation. I thought it was pretty ok teevee.

Also, what's this "Masterpiece" shit?
