Somebody told me.. (Like Snopes/Straight Dope but on ILX)

Inspired by the "standby" thread and "prawns in the curtain rail" thread earlier this week.

This is the thread where we ask ILX about things other people have sworn blind to us are true, but we're a little bit dubious.

As a sprout, my dad told me that eating before bed helps you get to sleep quicker. Was he telling the truth, or just making excuses for eating food in bed?

It depends if you're eating smack sandwiches or not.

the digestion actually keeps you awake, i think.

That's what I'd have thought! His theory was that you weren't being kept awake by your stomach rumbling.

Carbohydrates can make you sleepy, though.

Yep, complex carbohydrates will make you sleep I think.

I have a lot of trouble sleeping when I'm hungry...I think it's nice to have a little something in the ol' stomach from a few hours before. Not in the "totally stuffed into a food coma" way, although that can be great on a Sunday afternoon when you know you need a nap but you need sustenance first.

Eating lots will make you nod off, but that's not the same as a proper night's sleep.

it's because the blood goes to your belly and away from your brain.

I read a health article that claimed eating before going to bed is essential for healthy liver function.

I'm with Dr. chaos theory - what I heard was that eating anything much before you go to bed just trains your body to store the energy as fat.
