WTF David Lynch on the Radio talking about the Spirit of Well-being?!

Weirdest ad I've ever heard. He was talking to someone called Margaret (who you never hear talk even though he acted as if he'd got a response) and said he'd just got an email. Rambled on about how to know if you're healed and apologised for those who didn't get the "how to be patient" guides yet in the post. The next "program" is going to be about to heal disease before they manifest themselves on your body!

Is this a joke?

Nope.

I attended a presentation a couple of months back, I'll dig up the post here.

Token Celebrity + Misplaced Optimism + Pseudo-Science = Big Bucks

Hm, was just an info post I made on the main Lynch thread. Basically it was a speaking tour about transcendental meditation, but to his credit what he did was take questions from the audience -- nearly all of which were about film rather than TM, of course -- but answered them in his Lynchian way, was very affable, and discussed TM as it related to his sense of artistic creation. Hey, if it works for him. Everyone *else* speaking at the thing was a bit off the deep end and the brown-noser who introduced him was a horrifying example of obsequiousness.

Have you played the CD, Ned? (Saw him in Philly) I'm ascared to.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 16:25 (twenty years ago)

It was a DVD I got. I figured it would just replicate the lecture so I haven't bothered yet.

Lynch has spent time in Fairfield, IA at the center of TM -- the Maharishi School of Management and the corresponding "spa" center, whose name escapes me at the moment. The Raj? My husband grew up there (as a townie, not a follower of TM). They settled in Fairfield to start a utopia, founded by the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Yeah, that guy again.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 16:30 (twenty years ago)

They =/= my husband's family. I meant it to refer to the new agey people.

The Milkmaid (of human kindness) (The Milkmaid), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Wow! Ned why did you go? Was it to see the man in the flesh or were you interested in the TM?

Watch the DVD and post immediately after so we'll know whether to panic and call the police if we don't hear from you in 7 days.

Was it to see the man in the flesh or were you interested in the TM?

The first, thank you very much.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Alright, alright didn't mean anything by it :)

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 16:50 (twenty years ago)

Watch the DVD and post immediately after

-- Kv_nol (knolan8...), January 24th, 2006 5:40 PM. (Kv_nol)

-- Ned Raggett (ne...), January 24th, 2006 5:47 PM. (Ned)

So the DVD that teaches people how to be patient is shorter than 7 minutes? Nice!

is the maharishi still alive? how old is he now?

The most recent issue of Arthur has a nice article written by Lynch where he goes into the background of how he learned and applied meditation principles.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 24 January 2006 23:04 (twenty years ago)

I didn't know Arthur covered the clean, shaven.

two years pass...

local educational community access is running a presentation from the Univ of Washington called "Consciousness, Creativity, and the Brain"

And here it is, whaddayaknow:
http://www.uwtv.org/programs/displayevent.aspx?rID=4169

Award-winning writer, director, and producer David Lynch discusses his films and his 30-year relationship with Transcendental Meditation, and its role in his creative process. He is joined by physicist John Hagelin, who was featured in the documentary 'What The Bleep Do We Know?' and neuroscientist Dr. Fred Travis, Director of the Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition at Maharishi University of Management. The program is sponsored in joint partnership by the College of Arts and Sciences and the University of Washington Alumni Association.

Kinda neat when they had a student hooked up to a full-on EEG rig and were displaying the results in real-time when he would pop in & out of a TM state

Vault Boy Bobblehead - Drinking (kingfish), Friday, 2 January 2009 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

three weeks pass...

He's holding a benefit concert. And making a "road movie" about TM.

Highlights of the film will include Lynch jamming with Moby
