Schmitt's Gay = classic
Sam Waterson's Old Glory robot insurance = double classic

jonviachicago, Wednesday, 25 January 2006 03:55 (twenty years ago)

err, yeah. search both of those.

Ha, I love the robot insurance one. That also reminds me of the commercial for home-protection dummies that look like attackers "The best way to avoid a burglary is if it appears that someone is already breaking into your house."

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 04:04 (twenty years ago)

Search the one with Roseanne Barr as the credit card customer service rep and Phil Hartman as the satisfied customer. "She gave me several options."

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 04:04 (twenty years ago)

My two favorites:

Swill, the bottled water "dredged from Lake Erie."

Spud Beer, with Alan Zweibel as the electroshock patient.

truck-patch pixel farmer (my crop froze in the field) (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 04:05 (twenty years ago)

Colon Blow, sounds delicious.

When the metal ones come for you, and they will.

Currently Sam Waterson does a commercial for TD Waterhouse, in the exact same delivery.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 04:05 (twenty years ago)

I have a soft spot for all the recent Tina Fey feminine-product ones -- Mom Jeans, Womba, classic Tampax pads, etc. (Tho the Womba one was basically just another excuse for Fey's "cooter" / "lady business" euphemisms.) But I dunno that any of them are quite as funny as the one with the girl asking Michael Jordan about that not-so-fresh feeling.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 04:12 (twenty years ago)

Actually: in contention for my favorite, up there with the robot-insurance one, is the Will Ferrel dog-insulting one -- one of very few spots where I find the guy funny.

They seem to be repeating them a lot lately. I've seen that 80's smoke detector one three times now. I don't know if thats normal. In Australia they just play the sandler/farley/spade/hartman era snl shows over and over.
And yeah Schmitt's Gay is classic.

"EYCH!"

and then the song: "EYCH EYCH EYCH! EYCH EYCH EYCH!" etc.

Eych! It's the only hairball remover that cats ask for.. by name.

I love the very, very recent TACO TOWN! "It's not a taco town taco until it's rolled in a "chicago-style deep dish pizza"

And The Bathroom Monkey: The one with Garafallo and a monkey who cleans your bathroom until it dies form exhaustion. "I son;t know what monkeys eat, I don;t knwo how they reproduce, but I do know one thing, they were born to clean bathrooms."

What's the one where they are selling a product that lets you mold stuff out of cat shit? At the end, the little girl makes a whistle.

"What happens in Thailand, stays in Thailand."

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 19:21 (twenty years ago)

I heart that one...

Businessman: Hey. It's me. It, um.. it happened again. Well, this time it's, uh.. it's a dude. No! I didn't kill him! The lizard killed him.. and, then, Ben Affleck killed the lizard.

[ Ben Affleck enters, dressed in drag ]

Ben Affleck: It was self-defense! That thing was making fun of me!

Businessman: Yeah. Ben Affleck. I don't know why he's here. He crawled in the window at 6:30 this morning, with a baby Kimodo Drago under one arm, and Kelly Ripa under the other. Yeah. From "Regis & Kelly".

[ Kelly Ripa runs into the room, screaming ]

Kelly Ripa: We gotta cut this dead guy up, and put him in a bag! This is bad, man! Ba-a-ad!!

Businessman: Ripa! Chill! I will handle this! Dude.. stop judging me, and just give me that phone number again. [ a beat ] Because the number's in my wallet, and the wallet's in the dead dude.

[ SUPER: "What happens in Thailand, stays in Thailand" ]

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 21:08 (twenty years ago)

the single funniest thing I think I've ever seen anywhere was the Nikon camera commercial parody starring Gary Kroeger and Stevie Wonder. first Stevie takes pictures of Kroeger playing tennis, which means he takes out-of-focus pictures of the sky. then Stevie plays tennis. I still can't think about it for too long without laughing.

lurker #2421, Monday, 24 April 2006 05:32 (twenty years ago)

So it seems youtube has hosed all the actual SNL content (NBC threats or something I guess). None of Scotts links give up anything but kids doing parodies. Man, Youtube died fast :(

Anyway. I know there are a few SNL dvds around, Hartman ones and suchlike, but are there whole seasons available, or theme dvds like parody ads all on one?

I dont have cable so Ive actually never seen any SNL apart from one or 2 bits on the internet :(

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 24 April 2006 05:50 (twenty years ago)

i've never understood why they don't have entire SNL seasons out on DVD, you'd think the first few years especially would be huge sellers.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 24 April 2006 05:56 (twenty years ago)

Yeah especially if NBC are so hardass about it being on the 'net!

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 24 April 2006 06:13 (twenty years ago)

I wish they'd put out ALL of the musical performances on DVD too - inlcuding the ones from "the embarassing years".

dave's good arm (facsimile) (dave225.3), Monday, 24 April 2006 11:54 (twenty years ago)

i think its the rights to the music that are keeping it off dvd - when they used to sell full episodes of the classic seasons on vhs in the 80s, they would often have the musical performances edited out.

i am not a nugget (stevie), Monday, 24 April 2006 12:20 (twenty years ago)

No Hartman, no credibility.

The recent one he did about Disney was pretty darn funny. "Jim Henson!!"

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 24 April 2006 14:26 (twenty years ago)

eight years pass...

Saw "Sleepytime Rat Control" yesterday and it was hilarious and sort of disturbing. It's from the early 90s era so it has Phil Hartman doing his Troy McClure-style infomercial voice and it is just incredible.

▴▲ ▴TH3CR()$BY$H()W▴▲ ▴ (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 22 May 2014 16:22 (twelve years ago)

but are there whole seasons available, or theme dvds like parody ads all on one?

Netflix and Hulu have had, at various times, whole seasons available, but the episodes are chopped up beyond belief and some of the funniest sketches and all of the musical performances are missing.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 22 May 2014 17:07 (twelve years ago)

we had a similar nativity set like that when i was a kid (sans the hilariously annoying cries of course). when I was like 5 I picked up Jesus and turned him into a rocket ship, then in a bit of recklessness accidentally domed one of the Wise Men and my mom screamed at me.

parents still have the thing - u can still see where my dad glued the wise man's head back on
