Help me buy an office chair!

I've been killing my back by working at the dining room table. The one in my office is a cheapo generic from Quill, okay on my back but it's falling apart and sometimes does that alarming sudden-collapse thing. I want a slightly better one for when I work at home, but there seems to be a big gap between cheapo and unaffordable. Is there a good one out there for under $300?

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 26 January 2006 17:24 (twenty years ago)

Yup. I'd recommend hitting up Craigslist for a slightly-used one, which will save you a LOT of dough for a decent->good chair.

As for brandnames, I couldn't give any. If you wanted a new one, you could always try the local Office Max/Depot, since they seem to always have a selection of chairs for sale by the exit doors.

Are there are office supply surplus stores in your area? You may be able to find something gently used at a substantial markdown.

xpost Yeah, what kingfish said, too.

Ask this guy where he got his.

I have a cheapo one which is fine except it creaks

Jaq, this place seems to be selling off unused display models, maybe you can get lucky?

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 26 January 2006 17:40 (twenty years ago)

Those ultimatebackstore chairs are still pretty pricey—649 and 7-something, Yikes. But looking for a used better-quality chair is a good idea. Enron yard sale.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 26 January 2006 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, sorry, Beth, I misremembered you for Jaq. Obviously. But I have to say, my office just got rid of my off-brand upholstered desk chair and replaced it w/ one of the insectoid Herman-Miller versions and the difference is remarkable. It's not even so much the lumbar improvement that I love, it's the seat alone -- the mesh stuff they use is great. All the sitz bone pressure point areas are *poof* gone.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 26 January 2006 19:20 (twenty years ago)

I just assumed that Jaq is being slowly killed by her chair, too.
Maybe there's a bootleg version of those Herman Miller chairs to be had. I'm goona poke around.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 26 January 2006 19:28 (twenty years ago)

The oak desk and Steelcase chair I found used for $125 are turning out to be the best money I ever spent. The chair's seat padding is squashed flat, but there are always seat cushions, and the chair itself is built like a tank and has great back support. I have the best workspace I can imagine having, esp. arm support for my mouse-side arm.

I'm inordinately thrilled to have been confused with Beth Parker!

Not killed by one, but was trapped and humiliated by one of these once. I've got this one at home now and am happy with it. Sort of a Herman Miller knockoff, ~$300.

I had to fight for my current work chair. The powers that be moved my office 4 times last year, each time threatening to make off with my fairly non-adjustable but perfect-for-me black chair. I had to get a written dispensation in order to keep it. I don't want no stinkin' multi-colored fully-adjustable feels-like-you're-gonna-flip-over-any-second ergo-crap cookie cutter seating.

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 26 January 2006 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Jaq, you are a lifesaver! I'm going to order that chair! The one without the headrest.
I'm with you on the kneeling chair. They are the Earth Shoe of chairs.
Thank you everyone! I knew that ILE would come through in a pinch(ed nerve).
I've been posting from BED, that's how badly that bad chair hurt me.

My new office chair

phantasy bear (nordicskilla), Friday, 27 January 2006 00:34 (twenty years ago)

I am sitting in my new "Space" chair right now, happily scooting here and there. I assembled it myself, with the enclosed allen wrench!
It feels fabulous. The seat is firm yet gentle, like an ideal parent. I will finally heal my wounded inner child!

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Yay new chair!!! Did you bludgeon the old bad chair into kindling?

Jaq (Jaq), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 15:42 (twenty years ago)

We'll keep it for guests.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Wha'sit look like?

kingfish has gene rayburn's mic (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Evil chair or good chair?

That's the new chair, the same one Jaq linked upthread. It's not going to win any beauty contests, but its masculine seriousness restores confidence.

The evil chair is the only one of our mismatched (yet all painted the same Chinese red in an attempt at...something) wooden chairs that has not required repeated gluing and bracing. It's solid and heavy, with arms. It came from a yard sale and has an ancient brown sticker under the seat that reads "The Sikes Company, Buffalo, NY." It's going to outlive us all.

We just bought a used humanscale chair for my wife and it's really, really comfy

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 17 September 2020 19:15 (five years ago)

speaking of splurge chairs. I've done pretty well with my costco chair for about 8 years though. I wanted armless so I just took the arms off.

As long as a chair has most of the pieces it’s grand ime

calstars, Thursday, 17 September 2020 23:17 (five years ago)

℺ ☽ ⋠ ⏎ (✖), Thursday, 17 September 2020 23:22 (five years ago)

yeah that looks sweet. I hate arm rests, especially on chairs where I can't remove them!

Two Meter Peter (Ste), Friday, 18 September 2020 10:03 (five years ago)

a grand for a chair? I'd expect it to be a hover-chair with a freakin' built in commode and a back massager for that much ffs.

calstars, Friday, 17 December 2021 02:49 (four years ago)

i dunno, i spend more time in front of my desk than i do anywhere else including bed. feel like this should be a splurge thing.

these are apparently the gold standard?

Nah you just need a stool really

calstars, Friday, 17 December 2021 02:56 (four years ago)

i have a steelcase leap that i would probably feel better about if i ever attempted to sit in it correctly. but it's much better for my back than the garbage chair i was in before anyway.

don't ever buy one of these fancy expensive chairs new. you will probably be able to find one for less than 400 on craigslist and it'll be good as new. apparently i said the same thing a year ago.

, Friday, 17 December 2021 03:01 (four years ago)

also if you buy one try to sit in it like a human and not a goblin

, Friday, 17 December 2021 03:02 (four years ago)

not to be that guy who offers you irrelevant suggestions but would you consider a sit/stand desk, a cheap chair, and a nice floor pad for standing on?

call all destroyer, Friday, 17 December 2021 03:05 (four years ago)

i have considered this and tried it for awhile and nope unfortunately

When Young Sheldon began to rap (forksclovetofu), Friday, 17 December 2021 07:05 (four years ago)

I have been happy with the HON Ignition 2.0 Mesh Back Task Chair with Adjustable Arms and Adjustable Lumbar Support for the past 1.5 years. For the record, I'm 6'3" and around 250 lbs and basically sit at a computer all day for work. Whatever chairs we had in the office pre-covid made me incredibly uncomfortable, ergonomically. When we first went into lockdown I went through a number of seating arrangements that were not great. Haven't had any problems since buying this sucker. Researching office chairs online was pure hell for me because I grew suspicious of reviews and comment sections being plagued by salesmen masquerading as purchasers. I feel very lucky that this one worked out for me, because I was not looking forward to shelling out for one of the top-of-the-line chairs.

peace, man, Friday, 17 December 2021 14:51 (four years ago)

Although, like people said, you CAN buy Leaps and Aerons for much cheaper off of craigslist. I was just nervous about that and didnt have the time to drive 45 mins to some used furniture warehouse. Seemed risky to me

peace, man, Friday, 17 December 2021 14:54 (four years ago)

thanks for the vote!

When Young Sheldon began to rap (forksclovetofu), Friday, 17 December 2021 15:15 (four years ago)

fwiw i got my leap from officefurniturecenter.com for i believe $300+$75 shipping (beginning of covid, avoiding human contact)

ofc it was missing a necessary track piece but i told them about it and they had a replacement piece out within a week. otherwise it was good as new and hasn't suffered any wear in the past 20 months of me sitting in it for 40 hours a week.
