How is he in the "Carry On" films?

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Thursday, 26 January 2006 22:27 (twenty years ago)

Mostly pretty forgetable. Carry on Jack only has Williams, Hawtrey and Jim Dale and is generally quite shite. Carry On Spying is one of the best and is Babs' debut. Cribbins is quite irritating in both. He was in Carry On Columbus which I haven't seen but is probably an embarrasment.

Other films I've seen him in: The Railway Children (obv), The Mouse On the Moon, She, Casino Royale.

His singing career is better than his acting career. The two other songs I've heard are both as good as Hole In The Ground - Right Said Fred (of course) and Winklepicker Shoes Blues. Go to slsk right now!

On the basis of those songs and as the Wombles narrator - CLASSIC.

Carry on Jack only has Williams, Hawtrey and Jim Dale and is generally quite shite.

On the contrary, it's friggin' great - especially Kenneth Williams. I like Cribbins in it and in "Spying".

Carry on Columbus is a blast, then again I was born in 1987 and probably have a bias towards the "alternative comedy" side of it. And also Julian Clary's character is not very subtle, at all.

I wish they had done "Carry On Dallas" in 1985 like they nearly did.

everything, you had me at Casino Royale.

I'm so excited about the Winklepicker song I can hardly see straight.

he is also v. gd as a bumptious fusspot in an episode of Fawlty Towers

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 2 February 2006 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Oh right, I've heard about that.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Thursday, 2 February 2006 23:37 (twenty years ago)

Didn't he play a character called Cuffy in some programme?

DV (dirtyvicar), Thursday, 2 February 2006 23:39 (twenty years ago)

I remember Cuffy when i was a wee lad in the very early 80s.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Thursday, 2 February 2006 23:55 (twenty years ago)

I think his fawlty towers episode is THE BEST fawlty towers episode, just cos of him. "I was wondering if it might be possible for me to reserve the set for the duration of this televisual feast" etc. Gold!

Having listened to "Right Said Fred" for the first time in ages, I have concluded that it is slightly inferior to "Hole In The Ground" which is awesome and only 110 seconds long too. I think it's his laid back delivery that really sells it.

Did he not also do the narration on The Wombles in the 70's?

Here's the lowdown on his recording career:

That discography makes me ask the inevitable question:

TS: Bernard Cribbins "When I'm 64" vs Frankie Howerd "When I'm 64" ?

everything, Friday, 3 February 2006 16:06 (twenty years ago)

Sometimes they play "Gossip Calypso" on the radio in the afternoon. It's pretty old-fashioned in its attitudes to women, but insanely catchy.

Ah, Cuffy.
