Food Chain: RFD

So I'm reading a week old newspaper article about the recent mad cow case detected in Alberta, and the article says authorities say there is no increased danger of mad cow disease "entering the food chain."
Question: Does cattle ranch --> McDonalds really = food chain? Are we trying to hold on to some sense of natural order in an increasingly artificial system?

Well, in this case, the food chain is more exactly: sun -> plants -> domestic cattle -> humans. The fact that the plants, the cattle and the people might be in highly diverse locations and transported more than a thousand miles to reach one another is just a peculiarity of the present era. It probably will look quite different in 300 years.

Cattle --> Roy --> Tiger --> Vultures --> Rats --> Cats --> Dogs --> Goats --> Horses --> Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly
