Are there any good reasons why the United States should not be broken down into a number of smaller countries?

More defined political identity for regions that become sovereign nations. No more superpower status seems like it would only result in positive things: an end to neo-imperialistic possibilities and, as a consequence, an end to massive anti-American sentiment around the world.

I don't really see what the economic disadvantages of this would be.

(Sorry if this thread has been done before.)

according to the constitution the states ARE sovereign :(

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 03:17 (twenty years ago)

Well, say goodbye to the minimum wage. And national safety rules. And stuff.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 03:57 (twenty years ago)

Although I have to admit, "Midwestern Idol" would rule.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 03:58 (twenty years ago)

CSA to thread

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 04:07 (twenty years ago)

Try that again:

"Well, say goodbye to the minimum wage. And national safety rules. And stuff."

If red state area nation(s) wanted to adopt lesser standards in these areas then seemingly it would be in these nation's voters' interests to elect people who would do better.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 04:08 (twenty years ago)

Seemingly.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 04:15 (twenty years ago)

I've been pondering this question for a few weeks. In short, my conclusion = no. Granted, Oklahoma's pretty f-ed.

remy (x Jeremy), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 04:16 (twenty years ago)

OK, say you're right. Say there are only upsides.

Under what conditions could such a thing ever occur?

Would it still be worth it?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 04:20 (twenty years ago)

all we need to do is get rid of florida.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 04:23 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I know there are tons of comic books that have this scenario in them, but I can only ever remember, well, one of them, and it didn't go into how it came about, it just sort of told you that now the US was composed of "Northwestern Territory" and "Coastal Axis" and whatever the fuck else. I mean, I assume there would have to be some kind of massive civil war and maybe a nuclear apocalypse or two thrown in there.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 04:26 (twenty years ago)

(But it might be worth it for "Coastal Axis Idol")

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 04:26 (twenty years ago)

Except that power of other nations goes less checked, and China likely rise to become the new sole superpower.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 04:40 (twenty years ago)

Jesus, why can't I type English today?

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 04:41 (twenty years ago)

i've been preaching about splitting up the USA for years now. get loads of nasty responses from both republicans and democrats. could be cuz i'm an idiot who doesn't exactly know how it would all work out but i can tell you this, the southeast is extremely different to the northwest and i don't mean that in a good way. we should take everthing from San Fran north to Bellingham, excluding the lameass Mormon fuxx and Idaho and form our own pot-smoking, hybrid driving utopia. i'll make flyers.

haytorTot, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 04:58 (twenty years ago)

"Except that power of other nations goes less checked"

Better for this to be the U.N.'s job, NATO's job, etc., than George W. Bush's job.

No thanks.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 05:18 (twenty years ago)

Would the southeast really *go Confederate*?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 05:20 (twenty years ago)

I'm just saying, seems like this country once fought a war over this.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 05:39 (twenty years ago)

The possibility of war between the newly divided regions seems like a pretty good reason not to do this.

Stan M, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 07:27 (twenty years ago)

Because all the new, little countries would have to print new money with pictures of cornhusks and Mt. Rushmore and such like on them and no one would remember Andrew Jackson anymore, and vending machines would all stop working with the coins in your pocket each time you crossed a border, and your new job would be smuggling cigarettes from the Mid-Atlantic Confederacy into New New York? Is that reason enough for you?

Aimless (Aimless), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 07:40 (twenty years ago)

It could be like Europe.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 08:22 (twenty years ago)

I want to secede now. I want my house to be its own country.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 14:55 (twenty years ago)

we could establish our own aryan nation in idaho and montana, tim!

hrm, wait a minute.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 15:11 (twenty years ago)

This like the best conceit ever! Are there actually any good books/comix/movies/etc about this? I guess the man in the high castle is somewhat similar...

stewart downes (sdownes), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 15:25 (twenty years ago)

In 1977, Martha's Vineyard tried to secede from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (it also tried to secede from the United States and become an independent nation) along with the island of Nantucket.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secession

I don't think Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket could share a country for long, though. There'd be a civil war. And it would be ugly.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Martha's Vineyard even try to join up with Hawaii?

Then there were those western counties of Kansas who tried to secede because they felt isolated from Topeka, due in part to the Mountain Time Zone (???)

A balkanized USA would not be Europe. It would just be a bigger hassle to drive anywhere outside of 500 miles.

this is a bad idea.
