I don't really see what the economic disadvantages of this would be.

"Well, say goodbye to the minimum wage. And national safety rules. And stuff."
If red state area nation(s) wanted to adopt lesser standards in these areas then seemingly it would be in these nation's voters' interests to elect people who would do better.

Under what conditions could such a thing ever occur?
Would it still be worth it?

Except that power of other nations goes less checked, and China likely rise to become the new sole superpower.

Better for this to be the U.N.'s job, NATO's job, etc., than George W. Bush's job.

I don't think Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket could share a country for long, though. There'd be a civil war. And it would be ugly.
― Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 16:12 (twenty years ago)
Then there were those western counties of Kansas who tried to secede because they felt isolated from Topeka, due in part to the Mountain Time Zone (???)
A balkanized USA would not be Europe. It would just be a bigger hassle to drive anywhere outside of 500 miles.
