I heard him on Fresh Air talking about the new book last week. Maybe he's just one of those writers who can't talk, but he came off kind of awful in the interview, I thought. At one point, Terry Gross asked him how he responds to criticism about his exclusive focus on the lives of the wealthy. There are so many potential smart answers to that question, but he just had nothing. He said something about how the people he writes about are the "pinnacle of civilization." And he seemed really self-important. At one point, Terry Gross read from one of his books, and he commented, "Yeah, I must admit, I really worked hard on that passage." Like, you're a professional writer, no shit.

But I've never read any of his books, so maybe he's brilliant on the page.

i'm sure there was lots of irony in the "pinnacle" remark.
