Why did the elves decide to get free rings of power from Sauron ? I thought they were virtuous!

Mr. Latham Green (hanle y 3000), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 08:01 (twenty years ago)

Read the Silmarillion, it explains all. Temptation and power greater than the gods promised etc.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 08:12 (twenty years ago)

One of the great things about wikipedia is it has extensive info on such matters

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lord_of_the_Rings

Mr. Latham Green (hanle y 3000), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 08:28 (twenty years ago)

If the eagles could rescue Frodo and Sam from the volcano, why didn't they carry them there in the first place?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 08:31 (twenty years ago)

They's have been seen by Sauron, but once they had destroyed the ring, hey presto, no big firey eye.

Ed (dali), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 08:36 (twenty years ago)

Why didn't Sauron see Frodo and Sam then? Wasn't the whole point of the big battle to divert him to look at it, and not pay attention to what was going on in the other direction? Besides, even if Sauron had seen the eagles, the trip from the border of Mordor to the Black Mountain wasn't that long, couldn't they have flown to the mountain before Sauron's troops got there?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 08:45 (twenty years ago)

Whydidnt Frodo just hold up a mirror to the "eye" to refelct its evil

Mr. Latham Green (hanle y 3000), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 09:11 (twenty years ago)

Wow. This is pretty big, people. So you're saying that some of this didn't happen?

StanM (StanM), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 09:19 (twenty years ago)

Correct! And why didnt elrond just push that dude into the lava long ago when he first took the ring?

Mr. Latham Green (hanle y 3000), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 19:06 (twenty years ago)

Then Peter Jackson would have had nothing to make a film about!

People in books don't always do the obvious thing.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 19:08 (twenty years ago)

Sauron needs new glasses.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 19:10 (twenty years ago)

I think you'll find he needs a monocle.

Frank Swedehead, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 21:47 (twenty years ago)

Which is more noticeable: two hobbits skulking through the shadows or a giant eagle flying overhead?

The point of the battle was partially to get Sauron's attention but mostly to get the attention of his forces, who were more likely to see/intercept the hobbits that close to the mountain.

Dan (And So On) Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 21:50 (twenty years ago)

What he said. (Shocker, I know.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Its like when they used tiny littel germs to infect the martians in Wor of thr Warlds.

I wonder if The HObbit will be made anytime? It would be cool if they tried to make three moveis abotu the silmarillion, although its definateyl confusing with all the names.

Mr. Latham Green (hanle y 3000), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 22:03 (twenty years ago)

If the elves invested in industry they coulda built a giant robot but instead it was all a plot to kill Sean Bean.

Frank Swedehead, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 22:19 (twenty years ago)

Maybe it would have been best if Elrond killed hat guy and just took the ring of power - he would be a good supreme ruler

Mr. Latham Green (hanle y 3000), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 23:15 (twenty years ago)

B-b-but he was evil in that other film where he wore the sunglasses!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 23:17 (twenty years ago)

WIthout sunglasses he is not evil

"Why did the elves decide to get free rings of power from Sauron?"

It's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real; it's not real!

IT'S NOT REAL!!!!!!!!!!!

Gahhhhh!

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 11:02 (twenty years ago)

It is real! They've found hobbit bones and everything!

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Fossilized foot hair!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 17:14 (twenty years ago)

If it's not real then why is it so popular?

Latham Green (mike), Thursday, 2 February 2006 06:38 (twenty years ago)

WIthout sunglasses he is not evil

That would explain it, yes. He wasn't evil in that one film where he dresses up as a lady, wasn't he?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 2 February 2006 06:43 (twenty years ago)

Also, doesn't it seem like Gimli is made to be a total ASS MUSHROOM in th e film? They might as well have named him "Porky Hucklebottom" - the dwarves don't seem nearly as moronic and clumsy in the books

Latham Green (mike), Thursday, 2 February 2006 10:23 (twenty years ago)

http://mcsweeneys.net/2006/1/30james.html

that bit with elf eyes is my favorite, although the writer could've stopped with that part where gimli yells 'wait for me!'.

ai lien (kold_krush), Thursday, 2 February 2006 17:40 (twenty years ago)

excellent work

Mr. Latham Green (hanle y 3000), Friday, 3 February 2006 03:34 (twenty years ago)

Dear me.

As for me, I just ordered this tonight and I don't care what you think.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 February 2006 04:15 (twenty years ago)

But Ned, why when you have ILE would you need that book? Are you calling us dumbers!? %$@%^$#^#

No one in any JRR Tolien books has a normal name. Its not like "And Thorin Oakensheild's brother, Bob Oakensheild."

Mr. Latham Green (hanle y 3000), Friday, 3 February 2006 09:52 (twenty years ago)

Then how do you explain Tom Bombadil, eh?

David A. (Davant), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:03 (twenty years ago)

He doesn't exist any more.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:08 (twenty years ago)

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:14 (twenty years ago)

there's a song by section 25 i think you might like.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:21 (twenty years ago)

Tom is not a "normal name" - It is indeed exotic. Infact, most agree that this is the case. Besides, that part was written by Tolkein's wife.

ITS REAL ENOUGH FOR ME!ITS REAL ENOUGH FOR ME!ITS REAL ENOUGH FOR ME!ITS REAL ENOUGH FOR ME!ITS REAL ENOUGH FOR ME!ITS REAL ENOUGH FOR ME!

Mr. Latham Green (hanle y 3000), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:32 (twenty years ago)

there's a song by cyndi lauper i think you might like.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:33 (twenty years ago)

Tom is short for Thomas. That's probably significant.

David A. (Davant), Friday, 3 February 2006 10:36 (twenty years ago)

Thomas - one of the twelve apostles - six letters in his name - two sixes in tweleve or "Two Sexes in't ...we love" - andorgynony - TOLKEIN WAS A HERMAPHRODITE!!!!!!!! The Tolkein code is solved!!!!

Mr. Latham Green (hanle y 3000), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:02 (twenty years ago)

dear pete
please do not make one film on the silmarillion
love nood

The Man in the Iron-On Mask (noodle vague), Friday, 3 February 2006 11:06 (twenty years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 3 February 2006 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Oh dear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 31 March 2006 04:41 (twenty years ago)

c'mon Ned! Let's see a pic of you in your Tom Bombadil outift!

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Friday, 31 March 2006 05:19 (twenty years ago)

But Hanle y Deus, I have no such truck with Satanic garb like that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 31 March 2006 05:52 (twenty years ago)

Then why are there jerkins hanging from your bath!

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Friday, 31 March 2006 07:17 (twenty years ago)

Come on, everybody's had a jerkin in the bath at some time or other.

Nemo (JND), Friday, 31 March 2006 10:13 (twenty years ago)

I had a gerkin in my jerkin.

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Friday, 31 March 2006 10:22 (twenty years ago)

By the way - I have just read the Silmarillion and I have decided taht the Elves toook the rings of power becuase
1. they were deceived and didn't know who Sauron was at the time
2. the rings were actually made by elven hands, not Sauron so they were unsullied.
3. Elrond is a queen

Mr Jones (Mr Jones), Friday, 31 March 2006 10:34 (twenty years ago)

The dwarves got rings, too. Were they stupid ... or crafty?

Nemo (JND), Friday, 31 March 2006 11:40 (twenty years ago)
