Used to, few drinks would always melt away any tension and I could then relate to others in a relaxed unselfconscious etc etc. Nowadays, I drink and "get a buzz" or whatever but if I happen to be tense or depressed when I start drinking, these symptoms only get worse as I continue drinking. What to do?

Um. This might be obvious, but my first piece of advice would be "stop drinking".

i was clearly implying a penile implant there

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 22:05 (twenty years ago)

Yeah. cocaine's the drug people who don't do drugs anymore do.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 22:06 (twenty years ago)

Same phenomenon with cocaine! It was great for a while then the expense and the crash began to outweigh any positive effects (effects which would wane over the years). Sigh.

Have you tried chamomile? Very calming.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 22:08 (twenty years ago)

you tried myspace yet?

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 22:09 (twenty years ago)

cash money is the best social lubricant. giving to others cures depression. look at that old guy from that one movie about christmas.

nein Socken (nein Socken), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 22:09 (twenty years ago)

stop drinking

Mr. Latham Green (hanle y 3000), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 22:09 (twenty years ago)

or just don't drink when you're tense and depressed. (i've seen too many people turn into weepy drunks to risk it myself!)

Practice drinking at home more.

Drinking socially can have unpredictable effects.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 23:30 (twenty years ago)

Get comfortable with being around people sober, so you don't need the booze as a social lubricant. Relaxed and unselfconscious is do-able straight if you learn to not worry about what people are thinking about you. Lately I've found if I've got nothing to say I don't strain for small-talk and it feels good.

The Man in the Iron-On Mask (noodle vague), Wednesday, 1 February 2006 00:15 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, alcohol's quality as a social lubricant is overrated anyway. It makes people, too loud, too confrontational, too stupid, and even aggressive and violent.

Scientists should be working on developing a new safe empathogen for socialising, like a less toxic version of E.

move to glasgow to get the real kicks. feed animals in the zoo, then later maybe a movie too, and then home.
