It's a rather unpopular subject, apparently.

four years pass...

so, what's the situation with torrents at the moment. In the fallout of all the pirate bay and isp choking, what's the result of it all? Are there still torrents out there? is it all still same old same old, or is it a no-go area these days?

bracken free ditch (Ste), Monday, 5 April 2010 10:33 (fourteen years ago) link

it seems like a lot of private trackers have opened to fill the void, most with open application processes. over the past few months i've started using speed.cd, torrentday, and wunza. i wonder sometimes about their safety, but, yknow. they mostly have scene releases, nothing very obscure but certainly all the latest hits.

people always talk about everything going to streaming, but there's definitely a still-thriving underground of people that want to have the file and play it offline.

rafsan (rahni), Monday, 5 April 2010 11:17 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i'll always want to have the file offline, streaming just feels like it'll be taken down any minute. most torrent sites are still going strong (demonoid, piratebay, google + 'torrent') but yeah private trackers seem the way forward. are these sites the workaround for this new UK anti-online piracy law or do we need a anonymizer for that? i've heard newsgroups are good for this but i hate the ugly layout, having to download a new program, paying a monthly fee, etc. don't mind paying private trackers like thebox a bit of cash every so often though, such a shame a site like that could never be legal - it's one of the greatest public services of the past few years imo

there's a new wave of lawsuits out against US people doing this. I'll try to find the link about it.

Obv I do not condone this bcz it is illegal but does anyone know if there are any good resources for films ripped from non-Region-1 DVDs? Sometimes the usual public sites will have them but most often they'll have rips from the US release which are, in many many instances, inferior to DVDs that BFI or Masters of Cinema put out in the UK. They MUST be out there somewhere!

to clarify I'm talking about films that have been released in both the US and outside of the US, where the US DVD has a worse transfer than, say, the R2 DVD

i'm thinking about cord cutting and would like to get on board with a good US TV torrent site if anyone has recommendations or invites...?
will also settle for guess papers, spare gmail accounts and/or YSI

I ~think~ that a fair few people have moved away from torrenting and into streaming via custom builds of Kodi, if that's something that meets your requirements. I can't vouch for their quality or depth of content though, officer, but I suppose there would be a natural bias towards recently aired popular tv shows.

Vernon Locke, Thursday, 11 April 2019 23:13 (five years ago) link

i don't watch many shows, but there still seems to be plenty on the bae and ez+v

do not use the latter without a vpn tho

where is a decent limetorrent link that isn't springloaded with pop-ups from hell? I used to be on top of the torrents game but haven't a clue these days.

i find it p clean calz, firefox and adblocker etc etc

it might because I'm on goddamned virgin broadband that some of the good links are blocked to me. last time I tried, even with adblock and adguard both running I was still having problems.

When Kodi works it works well, when it doesn't it's a horrorshow. As a bonus it can do live-streaming of sport, as well as being a resource for other, niche interests.

Ulysses got a invite to a private torrent site in another thread, but for those willing to brave public torrents, I've overheard something called RARBG being recommended to another third party, along with an admonishment to always use a VPN in such situations. Finally, this conversation that I had in no way any direct involvement with mentioned something about being mindful of content creators and to find a way of rewarding them for their hard work.

Jaki Liebowitz (rushomancy), Friday, 12 April 2019 13:26 (five years ago) link

It's been a while, but when I got Kodi set up it totally "worked" but the connections were abysmally slow and the selection erratic.

Basically, if and when I need to find anything I am really stymied on the open web. My biggest frustration is paying for essentially four streaming services these days and yet frequently still not finding what I want when it comes up, due to rotating availability and what not.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 12 April 2019 13:53 (five years ago) link

If you wrangle up some friends Plex works really well for everyone to share their videos with each other. (ilxor plex ring?)

Dan I., Friday, 12 April 2019 14:13 (five years ago) link

i may be showing my hand as a complete technical inept patienceless fool here (surprising nobody but hey) but Plex, while being an easy install, just wanted me to do so much bloody work organising and categorising that i uninstalled. i think i even paid for the feckin thing

vlc, windows pc, limetorrents and i genuinely find i can get and watch what i need without too much hassle

acestream for live sports, though thats getting a bit shonky now

fremme nette his simplicitte (darraghmac), Friday, 12 April 2019 14:29 (five years ago) link

Anybody jump into iptv for the live sports angle? I’ve been trying over the last few months and it’s been hit and miss. On bijou dot fm now and it mostly works excepts when it just buffers buffers buffers

alomar lines, Friday, 12 April 2019 14:33 (five years ago) link

plex ring is interesting idea!
i will cop to still being interested in a btn invite if you got one lying around anagram.
but yes, thanks for the td invite; that may take care of 99% of my needs.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Friday, 12 April 2019 14:47 (five years ago) link

it’s pretty basic as a tracker but easy to keep ratio and they have most every current thing

alomar lines, Friday, 12 April 2019 14:50 (five years ago) link

I love Plex, which underscores an issue I have with so many services in that Plex pretty much does and plays everything in one place. I think way back when I first got it so that the kids could watch home movies, which otherwise I couldn't get to stream short of converting files with handbrake or whatever.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 12 April 2019 14:58 (five years ago) link

I really dread the day that Plex gets bought out or whatever, because--except for some frustration with getting it to scan and recognize newly-added files--it's easy and it just works. I spent a few hours trying to get Kodi working (on a raspberry pi, so maybe that made it harder than it otherwise would be) before saying fuck it and giving up

Dan I., Friday, 12 April 2019 15:08 (five years ago) link

plex has gotten wayyyy better in the last year or two.

plex + sonarr = wake up and yr shows are just ~READY~ wherever u wanna watch em

only reason i don't currently use it is bc my computer is fucked up. for real it's the best. (and even better i had hooked it up w/ usenet, which is hard ot figure out, but sonarr did a lot of the work for me)

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boot Edge Edge" (Will M.), Friday, 12 April 2019 22:15 (five years ago) link

i'd like to use sonarr but i don't have logins to any private trackers any more

Lil' Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 12 April 2019 23:31 (five years ago) link

plex just plays things though, it's not really a good kodi comparison (note: I've never seen kodi and only just sussed out that it actually streams stuff from general locations). Sonarr sounds interesting though.

I rely on Pir4t3b4y still (through some stupid proxy URL) and it's still fine enough in general. That said I'm probably just going to resubscribe to HBO at least while GoT is running because doing this all the time is kind of a pain in the ass.

akm, Saturday, 13 April 2019 01:08 (five years ago) link

it's really less about spending the money, which I'm willing to do, and more about ease of use these days. But there's always SOMETHING that's hard to find.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Saturday, 13 April 2019 01:11 (five years ago) link

thanks again for the ptp invite btw... the sheer amount of content and the rapidity with which they add more is downright staggering

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Wednesday, 24 April 2019 19:10 (four years ago) link

I have been through all of this and then some over the past few years and here are my thoughts:

Setting up Kodi isn't too difficult but it's such a pain in the ass to maintain, it feels like the good add-ons expire every 6-9 months and you constantly have to add and configure new shit as the old shit becomes obsolete, and then when you DO set stuff, once you pick a movie it scans all of these different available sources and then takes several minutes and the quality is very hit or miss. For as infrequently as I used it (a few times a month) it very quickly became not worth it.

Plex, otoh, is amazing. I was using it on my laptop but then got a free computer from work and installed Linux Mint and threw in a 1TB drive and now I just have a dedicated always-on Plex server and it's great. I find most of what I need streaming and for the things I can't, RARBG is usually decent (also I set up web access on the Plex machine's torrent client so I can add the torrents to the Plex server from my Windows laptop, v nifty)

obv a private tracker would be even better, I would def do this over trying to fuck w Kodi. what a headache.
