Bizarre Phobias.

I have a major problem with people watching me eat. My family I can handle but most other people is too much. I end up eating furtively and nervously. I don't think it shows. Am I insane?

This is the thread where you come out of the closet with your mad phobias.

Ronan, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I actually try and go and eat lunch on my own at college on the sly.

Ronan, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my flatmate's "frined/partner/fuck" has a similar thing...won't come round for dinner etc...why do you feel like that when others watch you eat? DO you imagine things?

I'm scared shitless of little inscetcs...also can be amjorly paranoid about walking down the street.

goeff, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I imagine that they're looking really intensely at how I'm eating. it's a nightmare, cos often I'm hungry and with people and I don't get food. I remember when my parents were away their friends rang and were like "why don't you come over for dinner", I was making lame excuse after lame excuse to get out of it.

it's madness really. I MAY BE A FREAK BUT I NEED RESPECT LIKE ANY OTHER HUMAN.

Ronan, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm scared of dying.

XStatic Peace, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I find eating in front of others really hard. But I am also scared of worms. Someone I work with is scared of sticky labels.

Anna, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I suspect my former coworker had this phobia as well, we had a going away lunch for another coworker and she just stared at her plate for the entire lunch and it would not eat a bite. It was a bit unnerving.

I hate and fear monkeys, they just seem like evil little cockfarmers who would murder you in your sleep.

Nicole, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm also not too keen on carwashes. but that's a secret too. sssh.

Ronan, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'm scared of the green flowery tops on tomatoes because they look like spiders. my sister used to pelt me with them on salad days.

nickie, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I used to be immensely scared of escalators due to a very scary dream I had about one when I was a child, where you could get sucked in at the top. I can get on them easily enough now but I still am not sure how much I like them.

Sarah, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A friend of mine is like this too. We all kind of ascribe it to an excessive delicacy that manifests in other ways also. He kind of puts his hand in front of his face if he has to eat a sandwich in front of you.

I go through periods where I can't bear to hear anyone else chewing; it's almost painful. I think it's a hangover from some spectacularly terrible (and eventually silent, bar the chomping) family meals in early teens. Most of the time I can tune it out now, but if anyone sits behind me on the train with a packet of crisps open I have to move (especially if they're stinking cheesy ones, which I have a borderline phobia about anyway).

Ellie, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it's so good to know others have the same problem. i cant wait for my dinner now cos theres noone round college and i'll be fine.

Ronan, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We should all come and visit you and stare at you while you eat dinner. HA HA HA.

Phobias...*thinks*...there are things that I'm very annoyed by, but not freaked out by per se, I think. Hm...I get tense walking by/through groups of Shiftless Males hanging around malls, they always seem like jocks out for a bashing.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am absolutely terrified of having something awful happen to my teeth. Seeing someone get punched in the mouth is bearable, but anything involving watching an extraction is TORTURE. I confessed this fear to a friend of mine, who responded by taking a fireplace poker and lightly tapping his teeth with it. I tried to snatch the poker away from him and accidentally hit his hand, which almost caused him to dent in his four front teeth. (That would have been ironic, eh?)

Dan Perry, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't fear them but I HATE cotton balls and I won't touch them.

This has really interfered with my childhood dream of becoming a share-cropper.

fritz, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

my girlfriend is scared of whales.

ever since age of 5. cant look at them or hear whale song. i looked at www.phobialist.com to see if that was on there but they havent heard of it.

ambrose, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, I don't really have any neat phobias - I don't like to eat in front of strangers, either, much. I do have a weird phobia that my teeth "look funny." I'm self-conscious about my mouth in general. But my younger sister used to be bizarrely frightened of ribbons as a child.

Mandee, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gypsy moths. Regular red, black, or white caterpillars don't bother me much, but gypsy moths are like the true face of evil. When I was little I got gypsy moth nightmares when it started thawing. Now I only get them about once a year, though.

Maria, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I actually hate people watching me eat too. I am very aware of what everyone else is eating and how much - if more than half of the table is not eating/picking, I won't eat a bite. If it's just me and Ramon or Otis then I'll eat whatever cos they eat like eating will end tomorrow and they have to stock up.

Ally, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I LOVE WATCHING ROANA AND ALLY EAT . IT CREATES IN ME MIND A HAPPY TIGERY FEELIN! I JUMPS AROUND LIEK THE BATBOY MAND AND FEELS AHHAPPY WAY! THE NEYBOORS GETTA HAPPY WAY IN DER HARTS AS DEY WATCHY ME!!!!

Mike Hanle y, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I heard Billy Bob Thorton say he's afraid of antique furniture.

Samantha, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fritz, I read somewhere that fear of cotton balls is a real phobia. You really won't touch them? They're harmless, and kinda soft. They feel nice, actually.

Sean, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

but they make that horrid sound...

nancy b., Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm scared shitless of little inscetcs

i would be too if i lived in australia.

di, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

di is 100% correct. The insects here are a nightmare: spiders the size of saucers and cockroaches everywhere (especially in Sydney). On summer nights they run all over the pavements. Last year I woke up with a huge striped cockroach CRAWLING AROUND IN MY HAIR. Now I'm very uneasy about them.

Nancy Drew, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am afraid of being in a confined space( closed in) Even in a large space I can sometimes feel the same as being confined as well and have a great panic attack. ( They are terrible to go through) The only insects I am afraid of are bees, earwigs & flying black beetles

Gale Deslongchamps, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Solo insects are fine but swarms of anything eeeekkkk!

ducklingmonster, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have a fear of getting hit by sports equipment. Things weren't helped when I got hit by a frisbee this summer.

rosemary, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like Japanese beetles. I don't garden, though.

Maria, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I heard Billy Bob Thorton say he's afraid of antique furniture.

He says he also has a fear of Benjamin Disreali's hair. Which could be useful to know should he ever come after you with a sling blade.

Curt, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

cockroaches are one of the reasons I'm moving back to the mountains...you can leave food out over night and it's still there the enxt morning....

my flatmate is scared of dolphins, but they are pack rapists, so I guess her fear is justified.

goeff, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I once had a conversation about how flying slugs would be the worst type of creature ever. Imagine: flopping through the sky on leathery wings with all the slug trail slime building up until it falls in one glutenous drop. [shudder]

Anna, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm afraid of Billy Bob Thorntons album.

Ronan, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A lot of people (inc. one of my sister's ex-boyfriends) are freaked out by buttons. There's a name for this. I can't remember it.

N., Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ronan, that's not a phobia that's called common sense.

Samantha, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah damn right, I saw him on Oprah that time and he seemed like the kind of person you want to skin and roll in salt.

Ronan, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't like elevators, but that's not very bizarre.

jel, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Phobias...I have a lot of them, I am afraid. Moss, for one, has been my object of horror since I was about 7. The stuff is just plain repulsive! When I see it, I cannot step on it, or look at it for more than 2 seconds before I feel like I am going to throw up. Another one is wide eyes...I don't mean people with wideset eyes, or people in general...but it's the idea that someone is watching me with wide open eyes and I don't know it...scares the hell out of me. Heights occaisionally...suffocating...nothing too odd other than moss I guess. Bah.

kimera, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Eye contact. Having my hands bound to my body. Losing my glasses.

electric sound of jim, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Somebody I know is terribly afraid of Bjork. I'm afraid of Korean rappers.

Honda, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually, just the YG Fam ones.

Honda, Monday, 21 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Earwax.

ear candling = unspeakable horror
