Pretty sad, actually, also considering what he and his wife were en route to help out with.

That's sucks. Total whammy, man.

This was the only game show I got to see at the studio when i was a kid! My mom and I watched our boss win $5000!

(Of course, this was a pre-cursor to another game show mini-history of mine, but i'll defer that story 'til later.)

Peter Tomarken! RIP! Holy shit.

btw, whammies actually do exist. They really did materialize in the air and moonwalk over unlucky contestants' earnings. It was magic.

I hope more people bemoan the loss of this guy than when the actor who played Porkins from Star Wars died.

two years pass...

Just thinking about this show the other day. Peter Tomarken. Inflation since then. Most people forget the rather dull question-asking half of the show where the people earn their "spins", but YouTube really delivers when it comes to Press Your Luck spins and the Whammy clips

And here's a snippet of Michael Larson, The Contestant Who Decoded The Press Your Luck Board Pattern

I just finished watching the double episode where Michael Larson won all the money. It was exciting even though I knew exactly what he was doing and what was going to happen.

The best part about all of this was seeing the Boy George Whammy for the first time in about 23 years.

This Elizabeth Banks reboot is pretty good.

Jesus Christ, one of the prizes is accompanying Michael Bolton for 10 tour dates.

The original version of this show was my mom's absolute favorite game show so it obviously conjures up exceptionally happy memories in me, especially since she would make sure to catch the USA reruns of it whenever she would take time off work to spend it with me during summer vacation. I'm glad the new Elizabeth Banks version appears to preserve the look of the original much more than the GSN version that was on the air for awhile. I hope she's a better host, too.

Fun fact: Savage Steve Holland, writer and director of Better Off Dead and One Crazy Summer, designed and animated the Whammies.

The new Whammies preserve the style and sound of the originals too. Don't know if Holland is involved or not.

Banks is pretty good. One of the things I liked about Tomarken was how much he wasn't a total pro host. He was a production guy who crossed over, and iirc PYL was only his first or second series. In every episode he seemed to be falling over his words or making a joke (or jokes) that clearly didn't land, which he'd awkwardly have to talk his way out of. Pretty relatable, imho.
