YAY! She was kidnapped in Iraq way back in January, and since then it's been a hellish wait, hoping beyond hope that eventually my good friend and former journalism colleague Jill would be released... and finally today she is FREE! WOO HOO!
Sorry... most of you probably don't give a toss, and I haven't even logged into ILE in months, but I'm just so excited, I had to share.
One more time.... YAY!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 30 March 2006 12:12 (twenty years ago)

wow, stacey, i didn't know you knew her ... anyway, this is very good news indeed.

(sorry i've not been in touch for a while too!)

I'm so pleased that your friend is safe again :)

C J (C J), Thursday, 30 March 2006 12:24 (twenty years ago)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 30 March 2006 13:43 (twenty years ago)

she seemed incredibly calm and healthy on tv this morning.

sunny successor (katharine), Thursday, 30 March 2006 13:46 (twenty years ago)

*much merriment*

ned faggett, Thursday, 30 March 2006 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Even the trolls are happy! :-D

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 March 2006 14:42 (twenty years ago)

1st person I thought of when I saw this on the news was Stacey.
Good news indeed.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 30 March 2006 14:45 (twenty years ago)

This is great news, and I'm happy that she's safe.

However, the Douchebag Chorus feels the need to weigh in.

kingfish ubermensch dishwasher sundae (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 30 March 2006 14:47 (twenty years ago)

Great news indeed, and even better that the -- haha! -- douchebag chorus is denied their secret bloodthirsty wish to see this woman decapitated.

That said, am I the only one who keeps reading the title as JIM CARROLL RELEASED?

phil d. (Phil D.), Thursday, 30 March 2006 14:52 (twenty years ago)

HELLO I READ BOING BOING

Houdini Gordonii (ex machina), Thursday, 30 March 2006 15:18 (twenty years ago)

AND SO CAN JILL CARROLL NOW!

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 30 March 2006 15:19 (twenty years ago)

excellent news!

freepers are the worst ppl on earth

+++, Thursday, 30 March 2006 15:26 (twenty years ago)

whoa yeah, they really really are.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 30 March 2006 15:49 (twenty years ago)

But wait! There's strong competition here for spots in the Chorus, with some desperately clawing their way into the lead spot.

kingfish ubermensch dishwasher sundae (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 30 March 2006 15:59 (twenty years ago)

I have been wondering about this for weeks but not wanted to go on Google News and dig through all the depressing crap, this is why ILE is good.

TOMBOT (TOMBOT), Thursday, 30 March 2006 16:02 (twenty years ago)

me too. a copy of Forced Entries sits on my desk, and i thought, wtf, he was in PRISON?

i am not a nugget (stevie), Thursday, 30 March 2006 16:11 (twenty years ago)

This is great and I'm really happy for stacey.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 30 March 2006 16:21 (twenty years ago)

She was released unharmed, ergo she was complicit in her own abduction? What?? FFS, you'd think the only thing that could convince the freepers otherwise would be to see Carroll bloodied or dead. What awful people.

elmo, holy helper (allocryptic), Thursday, 30 March 2006 16:24 (twenty years ago)

Suffice it to say that if you want to see the face of american evil in real-time, watch the shouty shows tonight.

kingfish ubermensch dishwasher sundae (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 30 March 2006 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Also, from NRO,

JILL CARROLL [JPod]

It's wonderful that she's free, but after watching someone who was a hostage for three months say on television she was well-treated because she wasn't beaten or killed -- while being dressed in the garb of a modest Muslim woman rather than the non-Muslim woman she actually is -- I expect there will be some Stockholm Syndrome talk in the coming days.

kingfish ubermensch dishwasher sundae (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 30 March 2006 16:35 (twenty years ago)

oh wow, this is great news (jc being released i mean).

amateurist0, Thursday, 30 March 2006 16:58 (twenty years ago)

[Pardon me while I re-post and toot my own horn a bit here]

If you google for [Jill Carroll Complicit], my blog is the first thing that pops up, out of about 10,800 hits. 589 hits if you quote "Jill Carroll".

I have been singing this song for nearly two months!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 30 March 2006 17:13 (twenty years ago)

one of the douches at LGF posted this link as "funny (?)"

Carroll's release elates local Muslim leaders

which is actually a nice article from the Detroit Free Press about all the Muslim folks in Detroit/Dearborn(who've worked for months to help with her release) being overjoyed that she made it out.

kingfish ubermensch dishwasher sundae (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 30 March 2006 17:16 (twenty years ago)

also, incessantly calling them "Moslems" C/D?

kingfish ubermensch dishwasher sundae (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 30 March 2006 17:37 (twenty years ago)

"Moslems" is hip and up-to-date compared to "Mohammedans," which I heard someone use unironically a couple weeks ago.

elmo, holy helper (allocryptic), Thursday, 30 March 2006 17:42 (twenty years ago)

oh, why do they hate people of faith so much?

mmmmm
mmmmmmmmmmmm
mmmm

i wanna go to a boozer and celebrate! instead i'm stuck at work re-writing pish tv guides and trying not to throttle a particularly annoying editor.
maybe i can try to finally cash in on a rumoured journalistic perk and mooch my hands on some tickets to massachusetts for a big jill reunion.
in the meantime, i refuse to read that trash. have they nothing better to do? i picture them all as mad-cap, unwashed, jello-eating hermits who secretly lust after their pets and are trying to make up for their evil desires by lashing out at actual good people. bah. fuck em all, fuck em with knives!
aww bless, i'm full of good spirits eh?

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 30 March 2006 17:56 (twenty years ago)

> "Moslems" is hip and up-to-date compared to "Mohammedans," which I heard someone use unironically a couple weeks ago.

Musulmen.

Bnad, Thursday, 30 March 2006 17:58 (twenty years ago)

i read a lot of 19th-century history books, so i see "Mohammedans" all the time. "chinamen," too.

amateurist0, Thursday, 30 March 2006 18:09 (twenty years ago)

"goyim"

That's probably not too far off the mark.

My Psychic Friends Are Strangely Silent (Ex Leon), Thursday, 30 March 2006 18:15 (twenty years ago)

In the midst of all this rumination on the hipness of muslim v mohammedan, I would just like to say that I am overjoyed to hear of Jill Carroll's release from captivity. Being taken hostage is no doubt a brutal and terrifying experience and being freed is just the first step in regaining what has been torn from her.

Aimless (Aimless), Thursday, 30 March 2006 18:18 (twenty years ago)

Still, scanning thru their bullshit holds a gross fascination for me(like with the other batshit fundie stuff I repost here). It's like when Ned tracks all the stuff he does on the Iraq threads. You get a sense of the inner rot of these people, and a good explanation for why things are the way they are in america.

If nothing else, it continually reminds me that humans are irrational as all fuck, and the idea of that we have evolved or progressed all that much since coming together 6000 years ago is a bit dodgy.

xpost

it's not the hipness I'm questioning, it's their (arbitrary?) choice of such antiquated terms to describe a certain group. I mean, it _is_ as alien as "chinamen".

kingfish ubermensch dishwasher sundae (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 30 March 2006 18:22 (twenty years ago)

wasnt dee the lurker a freeper?

+++, Thursday, 30 March 2006 18:22 (twenty years ago)

No, I don't think so. Dee's a nice-if-slightly-sheltered relatively conservative poster from San Antone, and shouldn't be defamed with such a label.

kingfish ubermensch dishwasher sundae (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 30 March 2006 18:32 (twenty years ago)

But still, dig the invective these folks throw around. They were fucking SALIVATING for her beheaded corpse to be found, defiled beyond anything Bill Napoli could have dreamt up. It woulda served two purposes:

1) finally proving to the world that those evil brown-skinned moslems are savages who should be wiped off the face of God's Earth

2) punished that trollop journalist who DARED show any interest in those moslems other than total hatred, thus proving how much of a traitor to america she and other lying journalists really are

....etc. you get the idea.

kingfish ubermensch dishwasher sundae (kingfish 2.0), Thursday, 30 March 2006 20:34 (twenty years ago)

isn't it a truism that you can basically find any sort of opinion or perversion on the internet if you look? so why bother looking?

amateurist0, Thursday, 30 March 2006 21:24 (twenty years ago)

free republic is one of the most popular messageboards on the internet and represents many popular opinions worth discussing
