I would recommend bringing a sleeping bag, just in case they say "Theees sleeping bag has only been slept in by Serge & Marcel, so eeet should be alright".

That's what they say.

Or maybe don't bring one, and then you will be invited to share by some attractive hostel ladies.

doesn't anyone have a more definitive answer?

(thanks though, DV!)

I would take one. Most hostels provide bedding but some don't. (Although it's a while since I stayed in a French hostel.)

Take one sleeping bag!

The sheets supplied may not be totally up to standard in a hostel. I stayed in a hostel in Amsterdam and spent the night shivering under a nylon blanket that only covered half of me.

One of my friends was slightly luckier and had a fleece blanket with a picture of a tigers head on it. Neither were particularly clean.

one more question: how much should I tip in France? What about Italy?

Yes, always take a sleeping bag when staying in hostels. You can get ones that pack right down into a small, tight ball, so they don't take up much room.
Some places though will NOT allow you to use your sleeping bag and you will have to pay for their bedding.
