And yeah, most porn is vile shit made by vile people. The business model fascinates me, though - when you're talking about billions of dollars, how are the producers still (basically) the dregs of society?

Isn't there room for an ethical porn model (I know some exist, but they tend to be feminist-driven and not necessarily something that will sell to your average straight guy)- movies shot in the vein of current porn offerings, but with better treatment of the women (maybe residuals, more say in production, altering the language - no 'cum-guzzling barely legal whores getting savaged by giant cocks'), less freaky-for-freaky's sake sex, etc. Am I wrong in thinking that less-hardcore variants would sell just as well?

With all the out-of-work BFAs graduating from film school, if I were a porn company, I'd totally be hiring them at low rates to do my DP work (pun not necessarily intended). Improving the lighting of porn wouldn't be costly and would give you a leg up (ditto) in the marketplace. If they're worried about future careers, just leave 'em off the credits.

xpost I'm guessing maybe it's related to the internet, i.e. when you have 20 seconds to get someone's attention and there's a sea of other stuff competing with you, the more shocking the better. This is my problem with the porn liberators / vampire feminist arguments. Add to that, there's always been an element of porn being part of the education of teenage boys, sexually speaking, esxpecially in cultures with an element of religosity affecting the manner in which sex education is provided.

Put it all together, and it's not good at all - a crucial part of the sexual imagination of young boys is being sparked by imagery that is about the increasing degradation of women through sexual practices.
