My thirteen-year-old daughter thinks that anyone who uses MySpace and who is over 25 is a pervert

Here on the North/South Carolina border, I have been fortunate enough to see "news" every few weeks for most of this year about the dangerous people lurking on MySpace. Is said 13-year-old's comment common knowledge, or has the media gotten to her?

someone let this mitya out! (mitya), Thursday, 27 April 2006 14:54 (twenty years ago)

What's wrong with being a pervert?

Just because you're a pervert doesn't make you dangerous. I object to this brainwashing.

Henrietta Leavitt and the Cepheid Variables (kate), Thursday, 27 April 2006 14:55 (twenty years ago)

Ask her if she thinks that the age will go up as the userbase ages.

JW (ex machina), Thursday, 27 April 2006 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Personally, being well over 25. I've had my own web presences and communities around for long enough that MySpace seems pretty pointless. So it also seemed pretty Johnny-come-lately to me (steps down from blogspot!), but sometimes, lately, I get this twinge of being the only one not at the party.

someone let this mitya out! (mitya), Thursday, 27 April 2006 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Kate, you have the luxury of being a woman. Single men (in the US, anyway) have no such luxury. I don't even talk to kids anymore.

someone let this mitya out! (mitya), Thursday, 27 April 2006 14:57 (twenty years ago)

And hurrah to that :-)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 27 April 2006 14:58 (twenty years ago)

OK, maybe you have a point with the gender/power dynamics, but this idea that anyone who is sexually deviant (I mean, that encompasses a lot) is somehow DANGEROUS - pervert encompasses a lot of things, not just rapists, child molestors, people who eat other people's penises, etc.

Henrietta Leavitt and the Cepheid Variables (kate), Thursday, 27 April 2006 14:59 (twenty years ago)

So you think anyone over 25 on myspace is a sexual deviant, then?

someone let this mitya out! (mitya), Thursday, 27 April 2006 15:00 (twenty years ago)

xpost It is really crude in both features, reliability and implementation compared to .... pretty much everything else.

Kate is OTM, FURRY PORN HURTS NO ONE BUT THE VIEWER!

JW (ex machina), Thursday, 27 April 2006 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Mitya if you and I form a band now we can be on MySpace with 'legitimacy'.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 27 April 2006 15:01 (twenty years ago)

I imagine a considerable number of people using MySpace who are UNDER 25 are perverts too.

M. White (Miguelito), Thursday, 27 April 2006 15:03 (twenty years ago)

And also, no, I don't think that anyone over the age of 25 on MySpace is sexually deviant, either. But then again, I object to anyone UNDER the age of 25 on the interweb, fullstop. Who the heck let all these children into *our* playground? I mean, it went from being the September That Never Ended to Kindergarten Playgroup.

Henrietta Leavitt and the Cepheid Variables (kate), Thursday, 27 April 2006 15:03 (twenty years ago)

Kate, I am under 25 and was online BEFORE the September that never ended. (I hung out with the dude who coined that phrase this weekend [he is a ilxor!]) :((((

JW (ex machina), Thursday, 27 April 2006 15:04 (twenty years ago)

I turn 25 today, I'll log into myspace after work and see if I have a giant PERVERT flag in my profile now.

My response to my friend who reported this about her daughter, was that it's normal for the 'younger generation' to think they discovered everything and the world is basically created for them (including MySpace). They're naturally going to find it incomprehensible when people of an older generation with whom they have nothing in common are using the same tools (probably in a different way but they can't conceive of that).

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 27 April 2006 15:06 (twenty years ago)

= ALL BANDS ARE PERVERTS

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 27 April 2006 15:06 (twenty years ago)

side question: with people now being less shocked than ever by stuff (supposedly), what actually, specifically, constitutues 'being a pervert' or 'sexual deviant' these days?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 27 April 2006 15:07 (twenty years ago)

(FWIW, I am taking the piss out of the sorts of things my Dad used to say when I got online and started hogging his precious bandwidth - which was precious indeed when a baud rate of 2400 was considered fast.)

Raggett?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 27 April 2006 15:08 (twenty years ago)

My 16 year-old cousin found me on MySpace and messaged me with the rather insulting "Wow, you really can find *anyone* on here." But he's a really nice lad and my cousin and I love him, so I can forgive the "Are you really 27?!!" comment. I mean why would I add years on? To seduce older men without them feeling as perverts?

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 27 April 2006 15:08 (twenty years ago)

maybe he thought you were older? (sorry)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 27 April 2006 15:10 (twenty years ago)

Sorry for swiping your anecdote - didn't want to clutter up the other thread with this.

Yup. Great guy!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 April 2006 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Your daughter is merely engaging in normal human fallibiity along lines so commonplace as to be unremarkable. She is generalizing upon insufficient data and therefore drawing invalid conclusions.

We seem to be wired for this fallacy; it has survival value in all those urgent situations where one cannot wait for sufficient data to emerge. She is too young to make fine distinctions between those situations when it pays to apply this urge to approximate and those when it leads to stupidity.

Aimless (Aimless), Thursday, 27 April 2006 15:33 (twenty years ago)

that sounds like perv-talk to me...

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 27 April 2006 15:35 (twenty years ago)

this vaguely reminds me of a guy in his early 20s who thought it was weird that a "middle-aged white guy" like myself listened to gangsta rap. i told him that i'm 4 years younger than dr. dre and the same age as ice cube, jay-z and ghostface killah, so the real question is what a kid like him is doing listening to such a bunch of old farts.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 27 April 2006 16:14 (twenty years ago)

To me, MySpace is basically like a version of Friendster that actually succeeded, but when I mentioned this to my 16-to-18-year-old cousins, I was met with blank stares: though they all have MySpace profiles, they'd never even heard of Friendster. (Which I guess proves my point.)

My response to my friend who reported this about her daughter, was that it's normal for the 'younger generation' to think they discovered everything and the world is basically created for them (including MySpace).

yeah i think most of my friends (im 26) on myspace have user ID's in the first couple million, out of 75,000,000 accounts. rosemary is like 15,000 something. i'd guess most of the 16 year olds have userIDs in the 20-30-40+ million range?

phil-two (phil-two), Thursday, 27 April 2006 16:29 (twenty years ago)

The media has told me that just having a myspace account makes a woman 13% less virgin than she was before. This is probably where the confusion comes from.

Cunga (Cunga), Thursday, 27 April 2006 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 27 April 2006 16:42 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, is there a way to find out what number of acount you have?

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 27 April 2006 16:42 (twenty years ago)

It's just your Myspace ID number, innit? Like go to View Profile, and it's the number at the end of the URL. Mine's 24-million-something. I was resistant for a while.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 27 April 2006 16:50 (twenty years ago)
