FAST THE FURIOUS: TOKYO DRIFT

he races the oldest son from home improvement (dude looks exactly the same and his name is CLAY and he has a red clownshoe viper) because he throws a baseball thru the back window of his monte carlo. they race for ownership of clay's girlfriend, bawitdaba playing, thru a half built subdivision, going off dirt ramps and through unfinished houses, until the viper smashes into a concrete tube. so, it's all on video and he has to go to japan to live with his dad, who is fucking a japanese callgirl when he shows up (the kid doesn't like japanese girls. he's trying to get with some non-japanese australian girl whose mother was club hostess).

japan is full of faceless masses of people and yakuza thugs and import models and everything is made of neon. his pure american values of fair play and honesty cause problems because japan is godless and only ruled by absolute sink-or-swim capitalism and conformism. he meets this yakuza dude with perfect unaccented english, who hates the world and eats animal crackers in every scene and acts like he wants to die and keeps giving him cars and drifting lessons. there's a beautiful scene where they drift thru one of those thousand-deep crowd of grey japanese extras and everything goes slowmotion and the world spins around them and faces slide past the windows while the kid and the australian girl hold their breath and look out in wonder or something and then the good yakuza dies when his rx-7 explodes and he has to go find the yakuza boss and beat the yakuza (and win the boss's grudging respect) with fair play and honesty and drifting.

I didn't think about it, but I knew the director did Better Luck Tomorrow (and that boxing marines thing that looked horrible) and the film has a dude from Better Luck Tomorrow in it! Not only that, his character has the same name, so I think he's supposed to be the same guy.

Anyway, I saw this on Saturday and the plot was pretty much boilerplate "kid fucks up, gets sent to live with a relative, starts to screw up but ultimately redeems himself" crap. I giggled through the couple of moral speeches and "kid" interaction (the actors are all oooold) and counted down the minutes until AWESOME DRIFTING ACTION. It gets three Ebert-approved stars on drift action alone despite a major WTF moment right before the final race and a ridiculous cameo ending.

5 was just a zippy, carefree popcorn heist movie with some suitably ridiculous performances and action sequences. Def benefits from the novelty of a franchise's fifth entry being the most successful and (from what I gather) watchable.

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 20:02 (ten years ago) link

as a former high schooler obsessed with cars, i really like 1... 5 was kinda where it jumped the shark by making the transition to general shootout/heist and stopped being about the cool cars... although maybe 4 was like that too. i dont remember much about 4 besides driving thru tunnels

Yeah, but that gap hasn't been closing by very much over the last few weeks. Firmly entrenched as third in the 'Overseas' though.

I was talking to a friend about a week before it came out, wondering about the financial fate of other seventh films to compare it to: The Dark Knight, Diamonds are Forever, the next Superman vs Batman. Looks like it's outperformed the first two anyway.

thought for a second there that tokyo drift had somehow become the third-biggest-grossing movie of all time while i wasn't looking

The director explained: “When we went to shoot in Tokyo it’s a very different culture. They don’t give out film permits. We would be setting up a scene and people would just walk right through the set. I had this one guy, I thought he said he was me. I didn’t know what that meant.

“I wanted to shoot in Shibuya, which is the most crowded place in Tokyo. The cops, they’re all so polite, so it takes ten minutes for them to come over and kick you out. They shut us down, I’d gotten all my shots, but I didn’t know they were going to arrest me. Another guy stepped up and said, ‘I’m the director.’ I found out that it was his job to take the fall for me. He went to jail for the night and I’m forever grateful.”
