Candy Intended Solely For Eating At The Movies: Search and Destroy

I bought a box of Jujyfruits last night when I was at the convenience store with emily_s and j_blount. It was some sort of peer pressure; they bought junk, so I had to buy junk. I'm convinced I couldn't have made a worse choice, as the things are even harder, more flavorless, and (somehow!) weirdly addictive than I remember.

What's interesting is that the convenience store seems to have a whole shelf of large-box candies specifically aimed at the moviegoer seeking to avoid a gouge at the concession stand. But supposing you're not on your way to the pictures - are these legitimate candy under any other circumstances? Where do we stand on these various confections? Including but not limited to: Sno-Caps, Raisinets, Goobers, Junior Mints, the aforementioned Jujyfruits (and their purportedly even more inedible cousins, Jujubes), etc. I know I love Junior Mints, but at the same time I sort of don't know what to do with them if I buy them outside of the movies.

Also, what about those candies that come in little red plastic bags, always with just too few in a bag to justify buying them out of curiousity? I don't know how to describe these except to say that one of the various available candies is, without fail, Circus Peanuts.

RED VINES
I like using them as a straw in a very cold drink so they get real hard. they last longer that way too, in my hands.
i used to gorge on jujyfruits on my walk home from school. what's your problem? suzy otm -- dots are good but the flavor is so mysterious it gives one serious pause about halfway into the box. milk duds > still having my own teeth when I'm 50, i hope. I don't like any other movieish candy unless peanutles count, unless they have the good gummi bears(Heide!)

d: junior mints, raisinets goobers, whoppers(except in minute amounts), don't know what the hell sno-caps are, seen them tho

buy one giant bag of NIBS, http://www.candyfavorites.com/shop/images/products/licorice/825.jpg then drive around for half a year with leftover nibs in drivers-side door, slowly eating. slowly giving up.

See, I knew DOTS were genius.

I must confess NIBS and Milk Duds are also great here, apart from Milk Duds make even the demure drool, and NIBS totally coat your teeth in a lingering pink sludge.

Miniature Charleston Chews are where it's at!

O YUM

http://www.taquitos.net/dbimages13/Charleston-Mini.jpg

My mom is obsessed with Junior Mints. She can tell you the average number of mints per box and how it's shrunk since she grew up in the 1970s. ("What a lucky day! 19 mints in this box, one more than the current average.") I always found her melted summertime Junior Mints in the passenger seat of the family VW, a dark brown smashed/melted blob of "chocolate" (read: wax) with minty puss dripping out. Those things are bad.

I disagree on the Dots front. They hardly taste like anything and they stay on your teeth until you brush. If you're going to make that dental sacrifice, at least go for Jujubees.

I have yet to finish a single one from this box without at some point having to pick its squished-up, cementlike form off of at least one molar. Is there some way to improve these things? Maybe boiling them or something? I'm concerned I'll never be rid of them.

Remy, think of a company you know makes candy corn and circus peanuts, and try that, also I think Haribo do them.

Red licorice sucks. In fact, it isn't even licorice. I'd say people that like red licorice are going to hell when they die, but evidence suggests that they are already in hell since they're eating red licorice.

100% CHAMPS with a Yes! Attitude. (Austin, Still), Saturday, 1 July 2006 20:42 (seventeen years ago) link

the only licorice that's red and doesn't suck is the panda kind. i think the fact that it's raspberry, not strawberry flavored helps. though i do have fond memories of my aunt buying twizzlers for the movies and using them as straws... they got all gross when the carbonation attacked the waxy part of the candy, but it was still fun.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Thursday, 17 August 2006 03:27 (seventeen years ago) link

xpost to july - i love black licorice but it's not really movie theatre candy. i don't even eat food at the movies. but when i was a teenager we would sometimes sneak candy in, and that is when my love for red twizzler licorice began. fuck that stuff is good. it's the perfect combination of fake-fruit taste and edible plastic texture. nothing else is like that. and you can tie it up in knots. now i eat it, like, twice a year, and it is still damn good.

rrrobyn, the situation (rrrobyn), Thursday, 17 August 2006 03:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Are snocaps like what we call freckles, but with white sugar dots instead of multicoloured ones? ie a disc of choc, coated in sugar sprinkle thingamees?

I like Raisinets. You should never pass up chocolate-covered raisins. Or chocolate-covered peanuts, which I also find at the movies. Also good to select: the bite-size Butterfingers, Reese's Pieces, and the Kit Kat bar large enough to share.
