does being minorly sick turn you into a big fucking baby?

I have spent the past 20 hours or so aching and puking and worst of all having diarrhea (worst because it necessitates getting out of bed). I think this is because I took a dose of metronidazole on an empty stomach. Now, I assumed when they say "don't take on empty stomach" it means you might have some cramps, some discomfort but not become dehabilated and vomit in potted plants by the local newspaper. Anyway, whenever I get laying-in-bed sick I smart at how unloved I am and why am I not getting a jumbo card signed by all my friends (even if there's no way for anyone to know I'm sick). In my delirium last night I thought "if they really cared about me, they would bring me a bucket of cool beads to run my hands through."

You poor baby! I am SO sorry this is happening to you! How awful! Ginger ale! TINY sips! Is there someone there to dole out TLC?

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Sunday, 2 July 2006 23:48 (seventeen years ago) link

I wouldnt call puking and the runs for 20 hours "minorly sick" emily! :/ That sounds awful :( Also, even on an empty stomach a medicine shouldnt do *that* to you really, maybe you should tell yr GP.

But yeah I'm a terrible whinger when I have a bit of a cold or a headache. My poor family.

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 2 July 2006 23:50 (seventeen years ago) link

aw, I feel marginally better already!

yeah, I usually swear by the gingerale, but that was what opened the floodgates this time. Trayce, I don't even have a GP or health insurance, and my TLC is on tour in Canada, so I can't even CALL him! Poor me. The last time I felt like this I had FOOD POISONING.

i always suffer my sicknesses alone. i kinda prefer it that way, i don't much like being fussed over

I do! BRING ME STUFFED TOYS, WATER, MAGAZINES AND CUDDLES STAT!

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 3 July 2006 00:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Yikes. I hope you feel better soon. It does sound a lot like food poisoning, but it sounds like you think it is something else. Stay hydrated and find someone to fuss over you. And even if you don't have health insurance, if it goes on for much longer you should probably call someone. (If nothing else you could call the Emergency Room; they might advise you to come in, but they can't make you do it.)

(And yeah, I'm a horrible sick person. I always plead with my husband to kill me. He always refuses.)

i've got mono right now.

they say the most important thing to cure mono is rest and not exerting yourself. i learned that the hard way today when i took a long walk, then came home and started packing boxes.by the end all my symptoms had gotten much worse and i was inutterably exhausted.

the problem is i start feeling really guilty if i just lay around the house all day.

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Monday, 3 July 2006 02:38 (seventeen years ago) link

If you dont rest you will have mono for many many months. Careful!

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 3 July 2006 02:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I had Clostridium Difficile once. Sounds a lot like this, dull stomach pains for hours.

It's hard to keep hydrated I'm guessing, but try to keep the water going in.

sorry to get graphic, guys, but the creepiest aspect of it is I'll have a bout of diarrhea and without fail I have to vomit right after. Also, I have a headache from hell & I started my period.

Tedious, Greg.

If the symptoms of knifety stomach persist and you start to do dry pukes and can't seem to deliver when the diarrhea fairy calls, WELCOME TO GASTROENTERITIS. All there is for it is water and a banana for now, like all food poisoning, but argh I hate America for medical bills anxiety for the most minor shit. If it really is le gastro though, you shouldn't eat spicy for a month, and you will be eating a lot of porridge, toast, and BORING FOOD.

Yeah srsly Suzy OTM I dont think this was the medicine you had somehow :|

i am tedious? :(

teh_kit has 22 friends (g-kit), Monday, 3 July 2006 10:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Suzy is right; Medical personnel will always tell you to eat the BRAT diet: bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. So, pretty much boring food. (no spicy for a month? So unfair!)

Sara R-C (Sara R-C), Monday, 3 July 2006 12:26 (seventeen years ago) link

I speak from bitter personal experience - I had to spend the best part of six weeks recovering from a case I picked up in Venice which, because of NHS, was no problem even when I had to go to hospital at 4am for x-rays and a drip. Whenever I randomly have an x-ray done, for whatever the reason, a crowd of residents and medical students inevitably gather around it and point at the giant staples I've got around my kidneys to hold them in place from childhood operations, I explain, and they're like 'ooooooh, that's RARE" and run at lightning speed for their notebboks.

Oh Suzy! Poor thing!
There should be PityPal like there's PayPal.
Emily, a nurse-practitioner explained it to me this way—sometimes the prostaglandins go nuts in a generalized way, so that everything cramps (and expels contents) at once—uterus, stomach, colon. Nobody wants to miss a good time! And the headache always joins in—you're dehydrated!
One side-benefit of this anti-inflammatory diet I'm on (or maybe I should say MAIN benefit, since my joints still ache like a bastard) is that I haven't had any tummy trouble. I knew certain foods would always set me off (movie popcorn=all night doubled-up with gut cramps). The diet is so freaking restrictive, who know which of the banished foodstuffs was the culprit.

Greg, I thought your post was fabulous, myself. Spewed coffee out my nose. More tedium!

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Monday, 3 July 2006 13:00 (seventeen years ago) link

so confused.

teh_kit has 22 friends (g-kit), Monday, 3 July 2006 13:02 (seventeen years ago) link

As long as you don't have a tummy-ache.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Monday, 3 July 2006 13:43 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not puking anymore! I even ate a raw chilly. (Probably not a good idea.) Maybe it was just the antibiotic? The question now is, is it too late to finish the course? Can't call anyone cuz it's the 4th.

I am srsly a major threat to public health w/r/t my inability to finish courses of antibiotics. Something stupid always happens: I drop them in the toilet, and it's too late to call in for a refill & then I just forget, or some similar flaky fucked-up shit. Whenever someone prescribes them, I'm like, "are you sure there's nothing else I can do," because I feel guilty just imagining what will go wrong.

emilys. (emilys.), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 22:16 (seventeen years ago) link

turns out blenchod nurse totally overdosed me! Another nurse I spoke to at the health department said, "what the fuck, normally we prescribe 4 500 mg pills" whereas this nurse (who totally sucked in other respects & had a WWJD poster up at the public health dept) presribed 21 250 mg pills.
