It should be considered vandalism when the government covers over graffiti that is actually cool and does a crap job of it

Seriously - on 1/9 coming out of the Holland Tunnel, in the covered roadway part before the Pulaski, there used to be a pretty awesome mural that was spread over a bunch of different concrete pillars, creating a pretty ingenious optical effect using perspective. A few months ago, it was painted over with these awful gray splotches that aren't even the same color as the pillars and aren't evenly done. Yeah, graffiti is an eyesore, but drab concrete pillars, now THAT'S more like it.

I would love for cities to compete for the title "The City of Paint" with the most numerous, colorful, clever, and just plain artful public murals and graffiti. Especially my city. By hiring me.

Ooh - "The Painted City" is even better, although it corresponds less well to "City of Lights."

Philly has some kind of campaign going to be the city of murals or something like that. There are some pretty great murals and some bad ones that are cool anyway.

every american city has mural of whales. it's usually, but not always, near the aquarium.

murals are good whether they are good or bad. always. in downtown miami, we have the whales, a giant basketballer doing a slam dunk, some lichtenstein type benday dot thing, and really stylized sailboats. and the coppertone girl getting her underpants pulled off. i love it! it's the only good thing about downtown.

Yeah, exactly.

My favorite in Philly is the giant goose one in Fishtown, but even the kind of cheesy ones of diverse children gazing into the distance are an aesthetic boon to the city.

another common mural motif: smiling multicultural crowd's supposed overflowing happiness comes off as maniacal and inhuman due to poor execution.

those ones freak me out. in cambridge mass they are legion.

Seriously, here in Texas where we're so close to the Mexican tradition of muralism, you'd think there's be a stronger impulse toward it. But really, we ain't got shit.

I mean, check this out - governors mansion of Guadalajara. Jorge Orozco.

YEAOW!
