Some similar details might lurking be on other threads, especially given Ned's much-publicised recent tour, but ilx google search ain't revealing too much....

...so anybody got any tips for upcoming gigs in Seattle, Portland or San Francisco in the next couple of weeks? It's my debut on the West Coast, and I'm just leaving my first stop in Vancouver. It's the first place I've seen a homeless dude playing his cello in the park.

Enjoy yer trip -- you driving, flying or going by train down the coast?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 July 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

Check out the Events listings on 43Places for the different cities.

Flavorpill is good for SF events.

Uh, you mean in the very near future, right? If you're in Portland after this weekend drop me a line (the e-mail below works).

Oh, also, who are you? Well, I can worry about that later.

Casuistry (Chris P), Thursday, 13 July 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

Also for Seattle, the Weekly and The Stranger have event listings.

Jaq (Jaq), Thursday, 13 July 2006 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

In Portland, the Willamette Week and the Mercury are the weeklies.

If you want way too many SF events, you can look at the Laughing Squid calendar.

I'd wanna see a show at one of the zoos: Woodland Park (Seattle) or Oregon (Portland)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 14 July 2006 00:33 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks for the tips! I was hoping to drive down to SF and then fly back up, but I've ended up doing the opposite (via a gruelling 4am flight), so I'm just sitting with the results of my first day's record shopping in SF. Checked out the infamous Amoeba. That place is a serious work out, but I scored some cheep Urinals, Captain Beyond, Flowchart, Bob Bannister and Art Bears. They even had a Nurse with Wound wristwatch.... yadda yadda yadda....

Anybody got any specific places that are worth checking on the Oregon Coast, specifically? Curious small towns, that sorta thing??

Gig-wisem, I just missed Warmer Milks here, but it's Climax Golden Twins and Porest tomorrow. Worthwhile, perhaps???

ZOT! (davidcorp), Saturday, 15 July 2006 03:50 (nineteen years ago)

You're driving up? Ashland is worth stopping in if for no other reason than the lithia water (with lithium in it!) (fountains are downtown); Cave Junction, close to the coast, is a random place I've always wanted to go (I'm told there's good pizza there); many of the little towns along the coast are cute, and when you get to Tillamook you can take the cheese factory tour and get some squeaky cheese.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 15 July 2006 04:32 (nineteen years ago)

also in case you make it that far, astoria is haunted

Lincoln City has a terrific used bookshop - Robert's Books. It's huge and the owner goes for lots of curious stuff and collects original pulp cover art which is framed throughout the place.

The aquarium that is somewhere on the coast has great exhibits of nudibranches and jellyfish. The sea lion caves were okay - we were there in August when the sea lions were vacationing up the Columbia or something.

I second the Tillamook factory - they also have an enormous ice cream shop. There's also an air museum there in one of the last surviving WWII helium blimp hangars in the US (other one is somewhere in Texas, i think), if you like looking at old planes and giant timber-framed quonsets.

Jaq (Jaq), Saturday, 15 July 2006 13:17 (nineteen years ago)

Oh! Also, if you are around Depoe Bay at lunch or dinner time, Gracie's Sea Hag is an absolute must. They serve good breakfasts too, but get a crab cocktail there (or two) and be in seafood heaven for 20 minutes or so. There's a small crabbing fleet that heads out from Depoe Bay, which is also something to see as the inlet is a narrow, rock-cliffed passage that seems to be always turbulent.

If you go up 101 in Washington, there's the town with Jake the Alligator Man (or whatever he's called), which many people seem to like.

Casuistry (Chris P), Saturday, 15 July 2006 13:58 (nineteen years ago)

101 in Washington is its own mystery... many great, many potentially frustrating. Many people think Seattle is right on the coast, when they talk about doing a full coastal drive up to Vancouver from San Diego on Hwy 1, and while even slight detours away from the coast in California can be a bit confusing to describe, it gets really wierd once you enter WA from Astoria OR... it's hard to explain to someone unfamiliar with WA geography why they just can't "ride the coast to Seattle".

It's hilarious but also frustrating to hear people complain that they drove up a whole hour up Long Beach WA and then realized it was a DEAD END.

FUCK, GET ONE ATLAS!

nine months pass...
I'm going to do this trip this summer, starting in San Francisco and getting the train (I can't drive) up to Portland, then Seattle and finishing in Vancouver.

I think I'm in Seattle around the time of the Capitol Hill Block Party, and I'm quite tempted to go to at least one day of that. Are there any decently priced hotels in the area? I tried googling but nothing suitable came up.

Jill, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

don't know if counts as decently priced, but consider - http://www.scinns.com/broadway.htm

gabbneb, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

this place would be more reasonable, i think - http://www.gaslight-inn.com/index.html

gabbneb, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

Ace Hotel is younger, arty, euro-boho/hipster-y, but pretty nice (and cheaper than gabby's recs.)

Our room was outfitted in a few KAWS original pieces which took me aback.

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

is that the one with the record players?

gabbneb, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:28 (nineteen years ago)

Jill, you can always stay at the Green Tortoise Hostel and catch the bus up to the hill.

Jaq, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I was looking for somewhere nearby because I'm going to be travelling by myself, so I'm a bit worried about getting public transport back at night to wherever I'm staying.

I guess the other question is, is the Capitol Hill Block Party really worth going to? I'm only going to be in town for 3/4 days, so I spend my days seeing Seattle's sights, rather than spending 2 days listening to music?

Jill, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

i would go to one day to the extent that you would want to include checking out a semi-pedestrian, youth-oriented neighborhood in your sightseeing, i.e. combine the block party with checking out broadway. if you're going to spend 3-4 days in seattle itself, i think you'll have time for that. but if you want to use seattle as a base to see things outside the city (and here's one option for same), personally i'd make checking out music a lesser priority.

gabbneb, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

If there are bands playing you're interested in, it's worth going to. Capitol Hill is one of Seattle's sights, imo. Volunteer Park at the north end of the hill is stunning, Broadway has its own scene, lots of gorgeous old homes and gardens abound north and east. The Seattle Asian Art Museum has a nice collection in a terrific Art Deco building in Volunteer Park too.
